The cast of Lionsgate's adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ 2025 dystopian novel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is finally coming together. Popular actress Elle Fanning has been announced to play a young Effie Trinket in the film. An older version of the character was earlier portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in The Hunger Games film series.
Elle Fanning's character Effie Trinket is the stylist for Haymitch Abernathy, a character played by Joseph Zada, in his preparation for the 50th Hunger Games. In the new movie, set 24 years prior to the events of the first Hunger Games, we see a young Effie, and not the experienced District 12 escort of the first four films. Elle's Effie serves as the stylist for District 12’s male tribute, Haymitch Abernathy, who goes on to win the Quarter Quell.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman spoke about how they cast Elle Fanning for the role. He claimed that when the book first came out, they wondered who would be apt for the role, as Elizabeth Banks had already made the character iconic.
“From the moment Suzanne released the book, one question echoed from fans around the world: Who will play Effie? Elizabeth Banks made her iconic — so who could honor that legacy while bringing us back to Effie’s early, most formative days?” he said in a statement, reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
He added that Elle Fanning, who is known for her roles in movies like Maleficent, Ginger & Rosa, The Neon Demon, 20th Century Women, and The Beguiled, was the perfect star to embody the character.
“For us, there was only one answer. Elle Fanning’s career has been transcendent. She has a rare presence — warm, sparkling and layered with extraordinary depth. She was the undeniable fan favorite from the start, and we’re honored she answered the call. The odds, it turns out, were in our favor.”
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s chairman, Adam Fogelson, announced in June 2024 that the company would adapt Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

“Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller and our creative north star. We couldn't be more fortunate than to be guided and trusted by a collaborator whose talent and imagination are so consistently brilliant,” Fogelson said in a statement reported by People magazine.
Since then, other cast members have been revealed gradually. Joseph Zada will play Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak is Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace will play Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons is Plutarch Heavensbee, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. is Beetee Latier.
The cast also includes Maya Hawke as Wiress. Ralph Fiennes takes the role of President Snow, Lili Taylor is Mags Flanagan, Ben Wang plays Wyatt Callow, Molly McCann is Louella McCoy, and Iona Bell plays Lou Lou.
