Elon Musk sets up a 'tentative' date for Tesla's Robotaxi launch: Netizens React

Elon Musk has announced that Tesla's public robotaxi rides are tentatively set to begin on June 22, 2025, in Austin, Texas.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Tesla CEO wrote:

“Tentatively, June 22. We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift. First Tesla that drives itself from factory end of line all the way to a customer house is June 28.”

On June 10, 2025, Elon Musk re-shared a video of Tesla’s first-ever robotaxi, which was seen self-driving on the streets of Austin, Texas. According to CNBC, the eight-second clip featured the latest version of the Model Y SUV. The car was seen pausing to allow pedestrians to cross while navigating an intersection.

A report in Reuters indicated that Musk promised a paid robotaxi service in Austin that will operate in a limited area and under remote human supervision. The test will reportedly involve 10 to 20 of its robotaxis.

After videos of a Model Y SUV emblazoned with “Robotaxi” surfaced on social media, they created a buzz among the netizens who were seen discussing its launch. Many Tesla fans are excited and are eagerly waiting to try it:

“I'm trying to order 50 of the robotaxis for my fleet. Show me the BUY button!!!!!!” A user wrote on X.

“This would be great in small towns also. Ex. Berlin Ohio,” another chimed in.

“Is launch still on track for the next couple weeks? Planning a road trip to Austin to check it out,” a user said.

“One of the few things that make life so much better. Thanks to you and your amazing employees keep up the great work,” a person tweeted.

However, some users doubted the “self-driving” technology of these robotaxis:

“How will they deal with annoying pedestrians who don't stop crossing the street? How will the Robotaxi drive through Boston, where pedestrians walk out into the street in front of cars constantly?” A user said.

“That is nice, but it's terrifying. This is what happens to me in my nightmares. I get in a car that nobody's driving and I can't control it. So I don't think I'm going to be using that but it's a good idea,” another person wrote.

“Not having a steering wheel seems unnerving. Time will tell,” one user added.

“Ya, but the car looks uninspired. Maybe make them less bland. Their personality should be less oatmeal and more rocket ship.” Someone else commented.

According to Elon Musk, robotaxis are:

“Unmodified Tesla cars coming straight from the factory, meaning that every Tesla coming out of our factories is capable of unsupervised self-driving!”

Musk said that he has planned to expand the robotaxi services to other cities such as San Francisco, although no details regarding the same have been provided yet. Initially, the robotaxis could be seen running across Austin, Texas.
