In her farewell speech on May 21, 2025, Deborah Norville told her colleagues:
“In my very first job in television, a woman I worked with told me I didn't belong there. I have spent the last 47 years trying to prove her wrong.”
She ended her speech with a powerful message, which said:
“And so my thought is this: Believe in yourself when it seems no one else does, because you may be amazed where that confidence will take you. Thank you all. Thank you so much.”
The TV journalist announced her departure from the show in April 2025 after she refused an offer to extend her career. Norville is also a former beauty pageant contestant and host of NBC’s “Today” show.
She began her career while she was still in college. She interned at Georgia Public Television’s “The Lawmakers.” She then landed a weekend reporting job at WAGA-TV in Atlanta.
In 1982, Deborah Norville was hired as a reporter and an anchor by WMAQ-TV in Chicago. She was promoted to host “NBC News at Sunrise” in 1987. In 1989, she started as a news anchor on NBC’s “Today” show before landing a job at Inside Edition.
According to a report in the Associated Press, Norville is planning to celebrate with a long vacation in Europe with her husband and try something new when she gets back. Reportedly, she will be hosting a game show, The Perfect Line. It is a new syndicated game show launched by CBS Media Ventures.

In the game show, contestants will compete by arranging events, items and people in the correct chronological order or logical order to create “the perfect line.” Each round eliminates contestants until only one remains to play the final round for a grand prize, a report in Deadline stated.
The show will begin airing this fall, according to Fox 4 News. Revealing her excitement about the game show, the news anchor said:
“I'm very excited about the game show. It's fun, and who doesn't want to give away somebody else's money to people who are happy to take it?”
Norville is married to her husband, Karl Wellner, and they share three kids: daughter Mikaela and sons Niki and Kyle.
