On August 14, 2025, Taylor Swift appeared as a guest on the New Heights podcast hosted by her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and his brother, Jason. During the conversation, she recalled her long battle to reclaim ownership of her masters, which include her first six albums.
Scooter Braun, a record executive, businessman, and the one who had acquired Swift's masters, was asked by TMZ about Taylor getting emotional on the podcast:
''I wish everybody the best.''
What did Taylor Swift say about buying her music back?
On the podcast titled "Taylor Swift on Reclaiming Her Masters, Wrapping The Eras Tour, and The Life of a Showgirl," Swift discussed various topics, including how she got her masters back.
During the podcast, Taylor described the time during which she got her masters back. She said:
''I haven't gotten my hopes up about this in a decade. A couple months after the Super Bowl I was in Kansas City. I get a call from my mom. She’s like, 'You got your music.''
"I very dramatically hit the floor for real. Bawling my eyes out, weeping."
Taylor regained ownership of her master recordings of her first six albums on May 30, 2025, and shared the news on social media platforms. In the podcast, she also spoke about the motive behind getting the master recordings. As per The Sun, she said:
''If I wasn't able to buy back my master recordings, one day someone would be leaving all my music from my first six albums to their kids in their will. When you think of it like that - I thought of it, I made it, I recorded it, I paid for most of those music videos.''
She continued:
''I wanted an opportunity to buy that back, that's important to me.''
The beef between Taylor and Scooter began in 2019, when Braun’s company, Ithaca Holdings, acquired Big Machine Records, which held the master recordings of Taylor Swift’s first six albums. The feud between them was highly publicized, with her fans and fellow artists supporting her narrative of artists owning their own work.
To regain control, Taylor had begun to re-record her first six albums as Taylor’s Version releases. Then in 2020, Braun sold Taylor’s masters to Shamrock Capital, Swift then directly worked with Shamrock to buy back her recordings.
In the podcast, Taylor also explained how much her catalog meant to her. She said that the catalog was her handwritten diary entries, and that each album documents a chapter of her life. She also said that she had invested her own money, effort, and creativity into making music videos, cover art, and visuals.
Taylor's new studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, is set to be released on October 3, 2025.
