Piers Morgan has slammed Stephen Colbert in a recent social media post, commenting on the reported cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which is set to end in May 2026.
On July 27, 2025, he took to X to share a screenshot of the New York Post front-page that read:
“No wonder he was canned, ‘The Left Show with Stephen Colbert.’”
In his post, Morgan said that Colbert and other late-night hosts have become “hyper-partisan activist hacks for the Democrats.” His post read:
“This is so damning. Most of America’s biggest late-night hosts have become nothing more than hyper-partisan activist hacks for the Democrats - a party that’s rarely been more unpopular. No wonder Colbert got canned. More will follow.”
According to a report in Variety, CBS has stated it as a “financial decision” and that it is not “related in any way to the show’s performance, content, or other matters happening at Paramount.”
Colbert himself has never shied away from speaking on his show’s cancellation. Here is what we know.
Stephen Colbert aims at President Donald Trump
Since the announcement of the cancellation of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert has intensely criticized President Donald Trump through sharp and unapologetic jabs.
He noted that the news comes days after he had sharply criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement of Trump’s lawsuit over a “60 minutes” interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. Colbert described the agreement as a “big fat bribe” and mocked the company for paying such a large sum.
In his monologue on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on July 21, 2025, he responded to Trump. Trump wrote his post on Truth Social, celebrating CBS’s decision to cancel the show:
“I absolutely love that Colbert’ got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!”
Referring to his post, Colbert said:
“How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism?”
He then added:
“Go f*ck yourself.”
Colbert's statement drew huge cheers from the audience in the Ed Sullivan Theatre. He then added:
“Folks, I’m gonna go ahead and say it: Cancel culture has gone too far. Over the weekend, it sunk in that they’re killing off our show. But they made one mistake: They left me alive. And now, for the next 10 months, the gloves are off. I can finally speak unvarnished truth to power and say what I really think about Donald Trump, starting right now.”
Taking a jibe at Trump, Colbert said:
“I don’t care for him. Doesn’t have the skillset to be president. Not a good fit, that’s all.”
Questing CBS’s statement of calling the cancellation of the show a “financial decision,” he asked:
“How could it be purely be a financial decision if ‘The Late Show’ is No. 1 in ratings?”
Recently, Jay Leno hit out at the late-night shows discussing “politics,” stating that people come to comedy shows to get away from the daily “pressures of life” and not to “hear a lecture.”
