“I would advise that it's untrue”: Akon confirms “Akon City” is still happening amid cancellation rumors

Akon City's fate had become a topic of great speculation over the past couple of days, but Akon has set the record straight with his latest statement on the project. Reports of Akon City's cancellation had emerged last week, but the newest update comes directly from Akon himself, who has revealed that the project still remains active.

Akon has laid the blame for the rumors on his detractors in a statement he released in an interview with TMZ, where he said:

"The impact that it's gonna do for Africa is kind of shaking up a lot of agendas. So you're gonna see a lot of misinformation on the internet, and I would advise that it's untrue. For the most part, the project is a city, so it's not gonna stop. When you're doing something that big in Africa, specifically with all these agendas tied to it, they're gonna try to discredit it for it not to happen. I just need people to be more wise and know that a project like this don't happen overnight."

What's next for Akon City?

Reports had surfaced last week about the fate of Akon City being in the doldrums, and reports from state officials had also corroborated the same. The project was first announced in 2018, promising to turn a small rural village into a futuristic city sans equal.

The Akon City project was imagined to run as a cryptocurrency-fueled economy, replete with state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. But due to difficulties in obtaining the necessary funds and the construction hitting a snag, the project reportedly had to be abandoned.

As per the reports that popped up last week, the government officials were also mulling over the prospect of taking back the land they had awarded Akon for the development of the project. They did, though, afford a bit of leeway to the rapper and had agreed to scrap the Akon City project in favor of a less ambitious one.

While the government's response had been definitive, Akon has now addressed the cancellation rumors himself and has reaffirmed his commitment to the same. The current status of the project remains disputed between the artist and officials, especially as the officials had already informed the media of their decision to pursue more modest tourism development plans.

With the government moving forward with alternative plans for the land and Akon insisting his vision is still alive, we will have to wait for a statement from the officials again to get a definitive resolution to this saga.
