Lizzo recently described her own love story as a classic “friends-to-lovers trope,” explaining that her relationship with Myke Wright grew naturally out of many years of friendship before turning romantic. She opened up about this on the May 14 episode of the podcast Therapuss with Jake Shane, saying,
“I had a friends-to-lovers trope. We both worked on this TV show for MTV. I was the music girl, he was the comedy guy, and I was just like, ‘He’s my best friend’”.
This simple beginning laid the groundwork for a close bond built on trust and shared experiences.

How they first connected as friends
Lizzo and Wright first crossed paths in 2016 on the set of MTV’s Wonderland, where she hosted music segments and he handled comedy bits. From day one, Lizzo felt comfortable talking with him:
“I didn’t have any guy friends like that… I could really talk to him,” she recalled.
Over the next few years, they shared behind-the-scenes laughs and supported one another through life’s ups and downs. This steady friendship meant they always had someone to confide in without worrying about romance.
How their relationship became public
Although their feelings developed slowly, the world learned about their romance in April 2022 when Andy Cohen asked Lizzo on live radio if she was dating her “mystery man”. Caught off guard, she confirmed that she and Wright were indeed more than friends.
Two months later, they made a relaxed red-carpet appearance at a pre-Grammy gala in June 2022, showing that they were happy to share their relationship with fans. Since then, they’ve continued to attend events together while still keeping many moments private.

How personal growth shaped their bond
In a December 2022 interview on The Howard Stern Show, Lizzo looked back on earlier challenges that had held her back from intimacy.
She admitted, “I had a lot of shit to do, and I still was very much in my ‘I feel un-loveable’ place, and I still was very much not where I wanted to be career-wise”.
Learning to share her fears and past hurts allowed her to lower emotional walls. This openness helped her and Wright move from close friends to partners who could lean on each other.

Why friendship mattered most
Lizzo often emphasizes that starting as friends gave them a strong base.
“We had this crazy bond for years,” she told Jake Shane.
Because they could already talk about anything, big feelings or small jokes, they handled tough times with understanding. This foundation of honest conversation helped them avoid the pressure that can come when romance starts too quickly.
Where they stand today

Lizzo and Wright continue to balance their work and personal lives without strict labels. She is focused on her upcoming album, Love in Real Life, and Wright supports her plans while pursuing his comedy projects.
Their story shows that taking time to build friendship first can lead to a steady, trusting relationship, one that feels more like a team than a fairy tale.
