When a regular night out at a concert turned into one of the most talked-about events of the year, no one could have anticipated it would go on to impact careers and create buzz worldwide. During a concert by the band Coldplay in July, a so-called “kiss cam” moment involving two high-ranking representatives from technology firm Astronomer went viral overnight, with the woman in the middle of the controversy finally speaking out."I never could have imagined just how much one moment might shape everything" said Kristin Cabot, a veteran HR executive who was the chief people officer at Astronomer. She calls the evening a "momentary lapse in judgment" brought about by a couple of glasses of drink and a convivial atmosphere with her friends. "The rest is out of my control" she said in a series of recent interviews. "The kiss cam landed on me and then CEO Andy Byron, and then it was off to the races."Ex-Astronomer employee caught on Coldplay kiss cam and the consequences that followThe Coldplay concert revealed a seeming romantic scene between Cabot and Byron, but their surprised expressions, with the female star turning away and the male star ducking, showed them to have been caught unawares. Coldplay’s star even joked about what was going on in this video, and internet users quickly began to make memes out of it. It was generally presumed by internet user activity in the following days that a relationship was going on between the two, even though they were both separating from their spouses.“What happened was so rapid that the dissemination of the video was such that what was essentially private choices became subjects of public debate” according to Cabot. This was overwhelming for Cabot, who noted that the incident was filled with “people harassing me, threatening me on the Internet, feeling like what I had accomplished was just undone in the space of one day.” Both Cabot and Byron have since been put on leave while the incidents are probed. Both have since resigned. In making a statement, Cabot chose to be responsible for the events of the Coldplay concert, stating it to be a “bad decision” and accepting the ramifications she has received. However, she also made it clear the reaction she received has been out of proportion, with the event not being representative of the rest of her life. This is the message she now conveys, of being responsible without being a victim and to move past the event, which nobody expected to get out of proportion.
