Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, known mononymously as Adele, is all set to debut as an actress after conquering the world of pop music, with former fashion designer Tom Ford's upcoming film Cry to Heaven. The Hello singer will be acting alongside Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, and Adolescence's star Owen Cooper, who is the youngest male ever to win a primetime Emmy Award. Along with these big names, the cast will also include Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Hunter Schafer, and Thandiwe Newton.

The film, which will be directed, produced, and written by Ford, is an adaptation of Anne Rice's 1982 novel and is set in the 18th-century world of the "castrati," who were male singers who were castrated to preserve their voices. The book is based on the story of two "castrati" in Venice who become successful opera singers.

This is not the first time the former creative director of Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent has dived into the world of filmmaking. Previously, Tom also created A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals, which were both highly acclaimed, the latter also earning him two Bafta nominations.

In a GQ interview, he said,

“I loved making the two films that I made. That was the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire life. I’m 62. Hopefully, I’ll remain somewhat together until 82. So I wanna spend the next 20 years of my life making films. And the clock is ticking. And so it was time to say goodbye to fashion. Fashion is a younger man’s game.”

Tom Ford had sold his self-titled fashion house to Estee Lauder for $2.8bn (£2.4bn) in 2022.

Fans react to Adele's potential acting debut

While some fans showed their support for Adele's new venture, others aren't quite as happy with this new trend of singers shifting to acting, as seen with Ariana Grande and now Sabrina Carpenter, though they both hail from acting backgrounds.

One fan said,

"Adele making her acting debut in Cry To Heaven? Tom Ford said “cinematic elegance” and cast a powerhouse 🎬👑 If her screen presence is anything like her vocals, we’re in for a masterclass in emotion."

Another joked,

"The way aint nobody will understand her British accent but we are still SAT for mother"

One person commented,

"Another singer trying to act. How original."

Another expressed,

"It doesn't matter if she's only in the trailer, I know she's going to eat that and we'll be there for her."

Adele's last album, 30, came out four years ago, and until last year, the singer was busy with her Las Vegas residency. After that ended, she had declared that she would be taking a break and wanted to "do other creative things just for a little while."
