The premiere of a Luigi Mangione musical is on the horizon. The 26-year-old who is accused of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is getting a stage play dedicated to him, and it will premiere on June 13, 2025.
Since news of Thompson’s murder and Mangione’s subsequent arrest broke out in December 2024, the latter has become somewhat of an Internet sensation, with fans and well-wishers gathered outside the courthouse in his support.
The musical titled Luigi: The Musical will run at the Taylor Street Theater in San Francisco. Its synopsis reads:
"A wildly irreverent, razor-sharp comedy that imagines the true story of Luigi Mangione, the alleged corporate assassin turned accidental folk hero,”
It continues:
"(The play) navigates friendship, justice, and the absurdity of viral fame” all with “his real-life cellmates … by his side.”
The musical promises a “bold, campy and unafraid” story of the murder suspect. The musical will also feature fictional versions of embattled music mogul Sean Diddy Combs and convicted Crypto fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried as Mangione’s jailhouse companion.
More details on Luigi Mangione’s musical play
According to the New York Post, tickets for the opening night of Luigi: The Musical are already sold out on the production company’s official website. The play created by Arielle Johnson and Nova Bradford draws inspiration from the musical Chicago.
Chicago is a classical stage play that follows the story of Hart, a fictional character inspired by accused murderer Beulah Annan. In the musical, Hart navigates life as an infamous murder suspect whilst forming a strong bond with her cellmates.
The creators of Luigi: The Musical describe the upcoming play as:
"Both laugh-out-loud funny and surprisingly thoughtful,” adding, “If you like your comedy smart and your showtunes with a criminal record, Luigi is your new favorite felony.”
The musical’s Instagram account shows the actors busy behind the scenes creating melodies for their upcoming premiere. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Nova Bradford, who directs the play, stated that the play was not meant to make light of the serious offense of murder:
"We’re not valorizing any of these characters, and we’re also not trivializing any of their actions or alleged actions,”
Luigi Mangione, on April 25, 2025, entered a plea of Not Guilty to federal charges of alleged murder through the use of a firearm, a firearm offense, and two counts of stalking. His next appearance in federal court is reported to be on December 5, 2025. Mangione faces the death penalty if convicted of the federal charges.
