The Met Gala 2025 will be one of the most memorable in the event’s history, and for good reason. The 2025 edition of the annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has generated a record-breaking $31 million.
According to a report by the New York Times on May 5, 2025, officials at the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that this year’s gala had already generated over $30 million hours before its scheduled start. This amount is the highest ever generated since the Met Gala’s inception 77 years ago.
The brow-raising amount, when placed side by side with proceeds from other arts fundraising events, solidifies the Met Gala’s status as a cultural phenomenon. The news outlet further reported that the Whitney Museum of American Art raised $5.2 million at its 2024 event, while the New York Philharmonic gala held in the same year brought in nearly $4 million.
The highly priced tickets for the 2025 Met Gala, dubbed Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which cost $75,000 for a seat and $350,000 for a table of ten, might have contributed significantly to this year’s high revenue.
More details about the Met Gala 2025: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style
This year’s Met Gala celebrates black fashion and takes inspiration from the 18th-century black dandy. Andrew Bolton, curator of the Met Museum, revealed that the 2025 edition of the illustrious event would be the first exhibition dedicated to menswear in more than 20 years:
"Superfine: Tailoring Black Style is our department’s first exhibition devoted to menswear in more than 20 years. The show also reflects our ongoing commitment to diversifying our exhibitions in a way that is authentic to The Costume Institute. What makes it possible to translate Monica’s book, Slaves to Fashion, into an exhibition is our collection of high-style menswear, which serves as a foundation for imagining and realising this important sartorial history."
The event's co-chairs include Anna Wintour, A$AP ROCKY, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and Pharrell Williams. Basketball icon LeBron James was named an honorary co-chair, although, according to Today.com, he won’t attend due to a knee injury.
The host committee includes popular names like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Doechii, Janelle Monàe, Jeremy Pope, Ayo Edebiri, Dapper Dan, and Sha'Carri Richardson, amongst others. Shakira, Lauryn Hill, Bebe Rexha, Madonna, and Nick Jonas are rumoured to be on the guest list.
