Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary celebration on October 11, 2025, was led by former cast member Amy Poehler. She returned to the stage that launched her into stardom. Her monologue featured humor, social issues, jabs at artificial intelligence, and more. Fans reacted to her speech, saying:
"Amy's humor is a much needed escape from reality"
The episode was a significant milestone for SNL. Exactly fifty years ago, it was first broadcast on October 11, 1975. It was hosted by comedian George Carlin. In her monologue, Amy Poehler stated:
"It is always a dream come true to be here."
She recalled her own childhood memories of watching SNL in the 1970s from her home in Burlington, Massachusetts.
Internet reactions to Amy Poehler's SNL monologue
During her monologue, Amy Poehler stated:
"Thank you so much. I am so excited to be here tonight. SNL is such a special place to me. I found my first love here being famous. And, you know, I'm still on some of the amazing medications they put me on, so I will be forever grateful. For those wondering, I'm not here to talk about a big movie or a TV project, but now that I have your attention, I am looking for an angel investor for my very elite brand of low-sugar, high-tequila sodas. called Polars Colars, which, just like me, are banned in the state of Connecticut. But life is great. I've got my new podcast, Good Hang, on Spotify. That's right, I am a podcaster now, and if that's not a recession indicator, I don't know what is. But tonight is actually a very special night for the show, not just because I'm here, but because 50 years ago today, on October 11th, 1975, the very first episode of SNL aired. And it was fantastic. Very good. And that episode was hosted by George Carlin, and just like George Carlin, I am extremely high."
Amy Poehler continued:
"But you know, the world looked a lot different in 1975. For one thing, women couldn't even have credit cards yet. Yeah, but now, I'm kind of like, somebody take my credit card away, am I right? I made them put that in. But it's always a dream come true to be here. I remember watching the show in the 70s, sitting in my house in Burlington, Massachusetts, thinking, I want to be an actress someday. At least until they invent an AI actress who's funnier and willing to do full frontal. By 50 years, wow, you know what's nice about turning 50? You start to not care about what people think. And that's what's so great about SNL. She's obviously stopped caring. But no matter the age, it's never too late to make new friends. Say hello to the newest cast members, everybody. Hey, Amy. We are so excited you're hosting. Just keep it moving. We don't know each other yet. Keep it moving. Okay, anyway, before we start the show, I just wanted to say one thing."
Amy Poehler concluded her speech, stating:
"I know it can feel like times are very tough right now, and in some ways, they always have been and they always will be, so I'll just say this. If there's a place that feels like home that you can go back to and laugh with your friends, consider yourself lucky, and I do. And to that little AI robot watching TV right now who wants to be on this stage someday, I say to you, Which translates to, you'll never be able to write a joke, you stupid robot. And I am willing to do full frontal, but nobody's asked me, okay?"
Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to weigh in on Amy Poehler's SNL return monologue. Below are some of their reactions:
"Amy Poehler just roasted AI harder than a bad open mic night, beep boop, indeed. But if we're talking 50th anniversaries, here's my reply pitch: "Amy, you turned 50 like a boss, but SNL's real MVP is that one sketch where the robot uprising starts with bad tequila. Congrats on the comeback, now drop that podcast episode on why we still watch humans flop.", opined an X user.
"when Amy Poehler hosted SNL in 2010, she did the same thing with new cast members that she did tonight. that's our GOAT.", noted another.
"Just beyond my ordinary comprehension, Amy Poehler turned an SNL monologue into a masterclass of chaos, charm, and class", lauded a third.
Others also chimed in:
"Queen of comedy back on home turf 🔥 Amy Poehler's monologue felt like a masterclass.", praised a fan.
"she could read my autopsy report and i'd still be giggling like a schoolgirl this woman owns my brain rent free", joked another.
"Amy Poehler absolutely crushed it tonight 😂 her timing, energy, everything, felt like classic SNL magic again!", commented a third.
Before her monologue, SNL opened with a political sketch. Amy Poehler took on the role of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Tina Fey made a surprise appearance as South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem.
At one point, Poehler's Bondi declared,
"My time is valuable. The DOJ has many ongoing operations, and we are moving like Kash Patel's eyeballs, very quickly in multiple directions at once."
Tina Fey's Noem followed up with:
"I am the rarest type of person in Washington D.C., a brunette that Donald Trump listens to."
