YouTube has announced it will add Google's Veo 3 AI video generation model to its Shorts platform. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan shared this news at the 2025 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. This move shows YouTube's ongoing commitment to AI tools for creators. Google introduced Veo 3 at its I/O 2025 event. This text-to-video model creates lifelike clips from simple prompts.
Veo 3 stands out because it can make videos with matching sound and dialogue, something many similar AI tools can't do. The feature understands natural language, designs sound, and generates visuals. These features allow it to create short videos that blend movement, audio, and scenes that fit the context. YouTube's choice to add the feature to Shorts follows its earlier launch of Dream Screen, which lets creators use AI-made backgrounds.
With Veo 3, the platform wants to expand features, letting creators make full video clips with pictures and sounds. This new tool is expected to be ready for use later, in the summer of 2025.
At the Cannes event, Mohan pointed out that AI has an impact on more than just what we see. It also plays a role in the work that happens behind the scenes.
“Today, I’m proud to share that Veo 3 will be coming to YouTube Shorts later this summer,” he said. “I believe these tools will open new creative lanes for everyone to explore. But what’s even more exciting than what you see on the screen, is how AI is helping creatives behind the scenes.”
He pointed to features such as auto dubbing, which has resulted in over 20 million videos being translated in the past six months.
According to YouTube, these tools are intended to enhance the creative process for both new and experienced users.
YouTube expands AI tools with Veo 3 integration and ad strategy in shorts
YouTube shared its plans to add AI video creation during its "Made by YouTube" event in September 2024. Back then, the platform said it would use Google's earlier Veo models to help make content through six-second AI-generated clips. With the feature, YouTube builds on those initial ideas by offering more advanced tools and creative options.
YouTube is also trying out new ad approaches in Shorts. As part of its broader plan to generate revenue, ads will appear for Premium Lite users. The platform is looking into AI-based ad spots that match with gripping moments in videos aiming to boost both viewer impact and ad results.
YouTube's move to include the feature is part of a bigger push to back its content makers and draw new people to its platform. While you might need to sign up for Google AI Ultra to use all of Veo 3's features—for sound—YouTube has hinted that Shorts creators will be able to use the main functions. When the feature launches, people who make content will be able to create short videos right on YouTube bringing tech and content-making even closer together.
