Akon's rep claims singer should never have been arrested, blames clerical error for alleged misunderstanding

Akon is best known for his career as a musician, with several chart-topping hits to his name. He has also become synonymous with the various humanitarian projects he has helmed over the years.

In the latest news involving the iconic singer, Akon was arrested on November 7 in Georgia on the grounds of an outstanding bench warrant related to an incident in which he was driving with a suspended license.

He was eventually released after reportedly being detained for 6 hours, and now the singer’s representation has claimed the arrest occurred due to an avoidable clerical error. In fact, Akon’s camp has stated the citation was paid but entered into the system incorrectly, thus resulting in his arrest.

According to TMZ, Akon’s representatives are confident that the record will be set straight on the matter at the artist’s follow-up hearing, which is scheduled for an unspecified date in December.

The entire ordeal involving Akon’s arrest dates back to an incident that transpired in September. As per TMZ, Akon was driving his Tesla Cybertruck in Georgia before it allegedly ran out of battery. At this point, the Police spotted his vehicle, which was stationary and impeding traffic, and they called a tow truck.

At this point, one of the officers at the scene inspected Akon’s license and surmised that he was driving on a suspended license for failing to appear in a prior citation dating to 2023. According to one of the officers,

"An illegal vape in the center console was seized during the inventory and submitted for destruction."

This incident appeared to set the wheels in motion for his arrest on November 7 in DeKalb County.

In other news, Akon and his wife of 29 years, Tomeka Thiam, are heading for a split. According to PEOPLE, Thiam filed for divorce just days before their wedding anniversary, citing irreconcilable differences as the motivation for her decision. Akon and Thiam wed in 1996, and she has requested full custody of their child.

Interestingly, Akon has been vocal about his belief in polygamy in the past and even revealed that he has nine children in total in a 2022 interview on The Zeze Mills Show.
