Are Mario and Peach just friends? Nintendo clarifies the relationship between 2 of its most famous characters

Multinational video game company Nintendo has broken the silence about the relationship between its characters, Mario and Peach. According to reports, for a long time, there have been speculations that the bond between the characters is based on romantic ties.

In a statement on its app, Nintendo mentioned that the two characters are just friends. The statement read:

“Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can.”

According to E! News, the two have had a strong bond since the inception of the franchise. Over time, Mario has bailed Peach out of various situations, especially when she would get kidnapped by Bowser.

The media outlet notes that previously, Nintendo came into the discussion due to Link and Zelda’s relationship from The Legend of Zelda. Meanwhile, Canadian actress Patricia Summersett, the frequent voice artist for Zelda, addressed the speculations in 2023, saying:

“Looking at the overall relationship between Link and Zelda over the ages, I personally love the ambiguity and that if there is something there, it’s left to us. I guess in my own life, I can respect and celebrate relationships that aren’t conventional.”

Similarly, video game designer Eiji Aonuma also weighed in on the discussion much later that year, stating that Zelda wasn’t the kind of game where the creators decided exactly what it should be or what the story had to mean. Instead, they preferred to let players use their imagination.

In 2023, Universal Pictures released The Super Mario Bros. Movie. A year later, Screen Rant published a piece highlighting some of the best moments of Princess Peach. One such notable moment was when she saved the titular character while they were riding a kart on their way to the Jungle Kingdom.

Due to a technical glitch, the kart malfunctioned, and Mario was about to be thrown out of it. However, the Princess grabbed his hand and saved him.

Another moment from the movie that stood out in depicting Peach's heroic abilities was when she skillfully stopped Bowser from marrying her. She managed to sneak in an ice flower in her dress and froze Bowser. Additionally, she also rescued Luigi from Bowser’s captivity.

Screen Rant notes that Peach performed remarkably at the Mushroom Kingdom’s obstacle course. She even went back to the kingdom at one point and helped the people there to run away. During this time, she was even ready to face Bowser with only a spear at her disposal.

Although she was successful in evacuating most of the people in the Mushroom Kingdom, there were still a few left behind. At this point, she faced the threat of marrying Bowser in order to save those toads.

In the movie, she even went face-to-face to fight Bowser as Mario needed time to regain his strength. Interestingly, she was also the first person to attack the King.
