Social media site X (formerly Twitter) is reportedly rolling back its location feature, which was introduced recently.

According to a post by ‘@rawsalerts,’ the reason behind pausing the feature is unknown. The post mentioned:

“#BREAKING: At this time X/Twitter has just now paused the account location feature at this time for unknown reason.”

Social media users reacted to the news, with one user commenting:

“Because people are getting exposed as frauds.”

Other users seemed to have suggestions to resolve the issue. One online commentator shared that it should have been kept on for a day to identify bots. The user wrote:

“They should leave it for atleast 24 hours so we can identify all the bots.”

A netizen joked that they were the reason for the rollback, as they said:

“Couldn't crack mine. Sorry everyone, I am why you couldn't have this nice thing. Maybe I'm in Albania? Now, maybe it's Paraguay? I'm over here... Now I'm over there...”

Another user speculated a possible reason for this, saying the feature was not reliable. They claimed:

“Reason: The location feature was extremely unreliable, showing false locations and warnings about users using VPNs even if they weren't.”

In similar lines, a second user commented:

“Haha, probably because X saw a big drop in user activity from developing countries. Big accounts there probably hated getting exposed-many fake American accounts (especially Indian ones) don’t want their real location revealed for obvious reasons.”

Commenting on the rollback, a platform user suggested that this could be due to their algorithm being affected. They shared:

“We all know why. Because it’s totally going to wreck their “totally fine tuned and organic” AI algorithm.”

What did Nikita Bier say about the location feature on X last month?

Earlier in October 2025, officials from the platform shared the news that user profiles would have more information, like country, date of joining, and username changes. At the time, Nikita Bier, who serves as the Head of Product for the company, shared a post writing:

“When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity. This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world."
"As part of that, we're experimenting with displaying new information on profiles, including which country an account is based, among other details. Starting next week, we will surface this on a handful of profiles of X team members to get feedback.”

When a social media user asked if users could be provided the option of not choosing the country of origin, he replied:

“There will be privacy toggles. However, if a user configures them, that will likely be highlighted on their profile. More to come.”

Another person online asked if the platform could show what device someone used to post, like an iPhone, because they felt it helped them judge people’s taste. Bier answered that they were testing different ways of showing device information so users could decide if a post seemed real or not.
