In a statement to Daily Mail, Atlanta-based scientist's mother, Nia Brown, claimed that her son is not missing and is "safe.
"I can confirm Julian is safe, but in the best interest of his security. I'm not able to provide any more information."
Julian Brown is a scientist influencer with over 1.8 million followers on Instagram. On July 9, Brown posted a video where he claimed that he was "under attack" and asked his followers to keep their "eyes open." He mentioned that he's "still working" and "still building," and he asked his followers to pray for him. He also encouraged his audience to screen record the video.
His alarming message comes after Brown claimed that a "secret helicopter" found and circled him in the "middle of nowhere" on July 3.
Who is Julian Brown?
Julian Brown is an Atlanta-based influencer who became viral after creating Plastoline. Plastoline is a technology that converts plastic waste into usable fuels like gasoline and diesel.
In May, he was featured in Forbes Magazine as the founder of Naturejab. This company produces natural products and explores innovation "in the use of microwave pyrolysis of plastic waste."
Before creating Naturejab, Brown was selected as a 778 Climate Fellow—a two-year program focused on innovation to combat climate change.
He also received a $100,000 grant from Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and Serena Williams' husband. Additionally, he started a fundraiser on GoFundMe titled "Support Solar-Powered Plastic to Fuel Invention," which has raised $31,175.
While speaking to Forbes magazine, Brown said,
"It made me so upset that even though we are told that are recycling, plastic is clearly ending up in the oceans and landfills where it is affection so many lives, including our own."
Brown also revealed that he learned his skills in a high school welding class and from his profession as a welder. Brown's invention, Plastoline, has been hailed as a breakthrough in environmental technology. Since Brown went viral, social media posts tagging high-profile officials such as FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino have circulated widely, with many urging federal investigators to get involved.
Environmental activists warned that Brown's breakthrough could pose a major threat to the established petroleum industries. Although it's unclear what danger Julian Brown faces, online users reportedly claim that the 21-year-old scientist might have faked his disappearance to attract attention.
