Discord has confirmed that Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, did not use the platform to plan the murder.
The 22-year-old allegedly gunned Kirk down on Wednesday, September 10, at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Shortly after, a nationwide search was executed, and Robinson was apprehended. Since then, rumors have emerged that he used Discord in his alleged plan. However, a spokesperson for the same told TMZ:
"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and extend our condolences to the Kirk family and everyone affected. In the course of our investigation, we identified a Discord account associated with the suspect, but have found no evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on Discord." The statement goes on: "The messages referenced in recent reporting about planning details do not appear to be Discord messages. These were communications between the suspect's roommate and a friend after the shooting, where the roommate was recounting the contents of a note the suspect had left elsewhere."
Everything we know about Tyler Robinson's alleged ties to Charlie Kirk's assassination:
As reported by TMZ, Tyler Robinson's roommate allegedly showed authorities a "joke" the former made on Discord, as well as messages that included:
"'Tyler' stating a need to retrieve a rifle from a drop point, leaving the rifle in a bush ... and a message referring to having left the rifle wrapped in a towel."
Discord has since affirmed to TMZ that these messages were not made on the platform, but instead, on a note that Robinson penned. As of this writing, the platform has confirmed that Robinson's account has not been deleted.
Deseret has reported that authorities have divulged that a Mauser .30-caliber, bolt-action rifle was discovered in the woods nearby, alongside a used cartridge. There were three rounds remaining in the magazine. Kirk was shot in the neck while addressing the swarms, and Trump confirmed his demise hours later.
Following a days-long search for the murderer, officers apprehended Tyler Robinson. President Trump also confirmed that a suspect had been taken in on Friday morning, though he wasn't sure of the accuracy. Authorities have said that it was a family friend who turned Robinson in after he "implied" he executed the Turning Point USA founder.
The New York Post has since confirmed that Tyler Robinson has been identified as the suspect, and officials are expected to hold a news conference to update the public about the latest developments in the case.
