OpenAI has announced the launch of its own browser, ChatGPT Atlas.
The company announced the launch of its AI-powered browser on Tuesday, adding that it will first roll out on macOS. Support for Windows, iOS, and Android will follow suit soon, and it will be available for free for users at launch.
News about the same has already made its way to X, where users are reacting with a blend of amusement, disdain, and a tinge of excitement. Here's how one user reacted, for instance:
"Can nobody do anything without AI these days? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"
The comments didn't end there:
"Oh man, a full OpenAI browser is wild, I didn't see that coming so soon. tbh I'm most curious about that "Agent Mode" they're previewing for Plus users—being able to automate tasks across the web is the real game changer," one user penned.
"Wait though, I kinda disagree that a new browser will change the game overnight. User habits are super sticky—Chrome still holds ~70% of the worldwide browser market share despite other great options. We need more than just a new feature, don't we? It needs to be a default install," someone else noted.
"even if people want ai in their browser, chrome and edge already have it built in, and they're on every platform... so i wonder who's switching to this...?" another questioned.
"They really woke up and said “Safari, Chrome, y’all move aside.”," a fourth user quipped.
See how the rest of X is reacting:
"Downloaded it. I love it so far. Let’s see how it well does in comparison to Perplexity’s Comet. That one has been a game changer," one netizen shared.
"I've always said that's the best way to make a good browser. That's why everyone thinks safari is the best one," another chimed in.
"Imagine retiring safari for this," someone else shared.
"Did we ask for this no but are people gonna use this yes," yet another weighed in.
Scores online were visibly divided over the news, with some even claiming there was a low chance users would abandon their default browsers for OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas.
Everything we know about OpenAI's Atlas:
During a recent livestream, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that he hopes its new offshoot will carve a new way for people to use and interact with websites, one where users can chat with the browser rather than simply typing in a url.
“We think AI represents a rare once-in-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about and how to use one, and how to most productively and pleasantly use the web,” Altman said. “Tabs were great, but we haven’t seen a lot of innovation since then, so we got very excited to really rethink what this could be.”
He said that the launch is a way to offer users a more seamless experience with using the internet. In an announcement, OpenAI said the browser is a step towards building a "true super-assistant."
"With Atlas, ChatGPT can come with you anywhere across the web — helping you in the window right where you are, understanding what you’re trying to do, and completing tasks for you, all without copying and pasting or leaving the page," the blog post states.
