The video, shot by an Associated Press correspondent, shows President Emmanuel Macron recovering before waving to the camera. He is then seen walking down the stairs with Brigitte Macron, who is wearing a red coat, matching the pair of hands seen earlier in the video. In the footage, President Emmanuel Macron is allegedly seen offering her his hand. However, she does not take his hand, and both of them walk down the stairs.
In the official statement from the Élysée Palace, the official residence of the French President, the incident was stated as a moment of fun and joking around between the couple.
"It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing one last time before the start of the trip by having a laugh. It was a moment of closeness."
According to The Guardian, Emmanuel Macron later spoke about the incident with the press to clear up any conspiracy theories that might develop surrounding their relationship. He said,
"People have thought I shared a bag of c*caine, tussled with the Turkish president, now that I’m having a domestic dispute with my wife … None of this is true. Everyone needs to calm down."
The couple, who are on their Southeast Asian trip, visited Vietnam for the first time in ten years, where President Macron signed deals worth $10 billion, according to Reuters.
In another statement shared by France 24, President Emmanuel Macron said:
"We are horsing around and, really, joking with my wife."
He further added that the incident was made out to be something it was not, which has led to it becoming a matter of worldwide interest. He said:
"[The incident] becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe.”
Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte, who have a twenty-five-year age difference, met when Macron was in school, where she was a teacher, and the pair later tied the knot in 2007.
