On July 9, U.S. President Donald Trump appointed the current Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, as the interim administrator of NASA. Trump took to his Truth Social platform to share the news, calling Duffy "a fantastic leader."

This comes after Trump withdrew the nomination of his original choice, SpaceX astronaut and billionaire Jared Isaacman, citing his donations to Democratic politicians as the reason. Trump reasoned that Isaacman would be an "inappropriate" NASA administrator since he's also a "very close friend" of Elon Musk.

Trump has yet to announce Duffy's serving period or whether he intends to nominate a full-time acting administrator. NASA has also noted that it has no further details on his appointment.

Who is Sean Duffy?

Sean Duffy is a former Republican congressman from Hayward, Wisconsin, and had appeared in the MTV Reality TV Show, The Real World, and Road Rules All Stars.

Duffy went on to pursue a degree in marketing from St. Mary's University and a degree from William Mitchell College of Law.

He is a former member of Congress and was earlier appointed as the United States Secretary of Transportation. Duffy, like Trump, is also a former reality TV star. In 1997, he was featured on MTV's The Real World: Boston and met his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, on the sets of MTV's Road Rules: All Stars. Campos-Duffy is a co-host of Fox & Friends Weekend.

Duffy was also associated with Fox News since 2020 and served as co-host of The Bottom Line on Fox Business. In 2022, Duffy turned down the offer to run for governor of Wisconsin, despite pleas from Trump, citing family responsibilities. He was previously the District Attorney of Ashland County, Wisconsin, for 10 years before serving in Congress, and won the election as part of the 2010 tea party wave.

He is one of several Fox figures whom Trump has tapped for key roles in his cabinet, including Pete Hegseth, a former co-host of Fox and Friends Weekend.

Duffy is also a former lumberjack athlete and boasts two speed-climbing titles. At the age of 5, Duffy started leg rolling and speed climbing at 15. He has also acted as a commentator for ESPN's Great Outdoor Games.

Sean Duffy and Rachel Campos-Duffy have nine children together: Evita Pilas, Xavier Jack, Lucia-Belen, John-Paul, Paloma Pilas, Maria Victoria Margarita, Margarita Pilar, Patrick Miguel, and Valentina StellaMaris.
