Reneé Rapp on coming out as a lesbian: “Sue me. Fine, OK.”

Reneé Rapp, who came out as a lesbian on SNL last year during one of its sketches, thinks her idea to come out that way was “amazing.” Just last month, she sat down for a chat with host Poehler on her Good Hang With Amy Poehler show, where she reflected on the sketch that saw her embody the role of a lip-reading intern.

At the time, she was dubbed “a little bisexual intern," which she had no qualms with. She later chose to specify that she now identifies as a lesbian instead. Rapp had recalled:

“And like, in private, I was talking with my girlfriend and a lot of my friends, for the last maybe eight months before that, of being like, ‘I actually don’t really feel very bi at the moment, I feel very much like a lesbian”

She had stated further:

"It feels so nice, and that word feels amazing and it feels very euphoric for me.”

She then decided to take it to the writers, asking them if they could switch the word “bisexual” to just “gay,” giving her room to identify differently in the future.

“And then I was talking to Bowen [Yang] about it, and I was like, ‘I kind of just want to be … lesbian, [...] I was like, I’m just going to kind of do it. And I called Towa [Bird, Rapp’s girlfriend], and I was like, ‘Babe, I think I’m just going to rip. I think it feels good.’”

Rapp also said that it was cool to come out on the long-running comedy show, though she acknowledged that some people would find it disappointing.

“I was like, ‘OK, what else do I live to do other than cause a controversy?'"

The 25-year-old quipped:

“Sue me. Fine, OK.”

Reneé Rapp is proud of coming out as a lesbian for the most part, but she was most upset with only one of its consequences:

“It was really interesting, because I think a lot of the people who I grew up around, who were incredibly homophobic, are very supportive of me now that I am a public person”

She went on, stating:

“Because I think the idea of fame and wealth can sometimes trump hate if it’s close in proximity, which is really f–king frustrating.”

She added further:

“Because I’m like, I know you don’t like anybody else who’s gay and you don’t like me either. You just like the idea of the closeness to something that is very shallow, so much so that you’re willing to put your bigotry to the side for a second to be like, ‘Oh, I babysat her!’”

In more recent news, however, Reneé Rapp made an appearance in New York City as part of the Citi Concert Series, held at Rockefeller Plaza on June 7. She was joined by tens of thousands of celebrants, alongside Laverne Cox, Gay Men's Chorus, and more.

The Leave Me Alone singer could be seen blowing kisses from the back of a pickup truck driving through the parade, with a transgender flag draped across it.
