Neuro-sama, an AI-powered VTuber, recently achieved a historic record by surpassing one million Bits during a Twitch Hype Train.

Created by British programmer and game developer Vedal, Neuro-sama reached Hype Train Level 120 with 118,989 subscriptions and 1,000,073 Bits gifted on Vedal987's channel during her third birthday subathon. She streams on Vedal’s Twitch channel powered by an artificial intelligence system that utilizes a large language model.

Gamesport reported that it broke her earlier record of Level 111 with 84,904 subs and 1,201,225 Bits, which she made this January. Vedal originally created it as an AI project initially focused on mastering the rhythm game osu!, aiming to develop the world's best AI player for it.

Twitch's Hype Train is a feature that activates when viewers collectively generate a surge of support through subscriptions or Bits. It kicks off when there is a surge of support events within a short span of time. The exact threshold to start is customized by the streamer in their dashboard. There is a cooldown period between Hype Trains to prevent constant triggering.

More details on AI VTuber Neuro-sama

Neuro-sama is an AI-driven VTuber fully powered by artificial intelligence created by British programmer Vedal. Onscreen, she appears as an anime girl who chats with viewers and plays games such as Minecraft. However, she is originally a chatbot that operates much like ChatGPT.

With her recent achievement, she has become the first streamer to hold two Twitch Hype Train world records consecutively. Unlike most VTubers who are human performers using avatars, her personality, speech and movements are generated by a large language model and associated AI systems.

During an interview with Bloomberg, Vedal shared details on the popularity of Neuro-sama. He said:

“Part of it is definitely the novelty. Part of it is some of the things she says. She can be quite chaotic, saying things humans wouldn’t really say.”

Vedal has indeed described some of her AI-generated responses as "stupid" or lacking assertiveness. Her unfiltered responses often come across as “mean” or rebellious toward him.

She debuted on Twitch on December 19 in a stream titled AI learns to play osu! (and become a Vtuber) on Vedal’s Twitch channel. Reports stated that each year on the same date she begins a subathon which features extended streaming, new models, songs, and merch launches. She featured by playing the rhythm game osu! while interacting with chat via AI-generated speech and personality.

In addition to being a British programmer and AI developer, Vedal is widely known as the mastermind behind the “neuroverse.” It is a community which is centred around his AI creation, Neuro-sama.

He sometimes joins Neuro in her streams as a small cartoon turtle, serving as his VTuber avatar. Not much is known about him as he prefers to remain anonymous, allowing his AI VTuber to take the spotlight.

VTubers exploded in popularity during the late 2010s and especially the 2020s. While most VTubers are human performers using animated avatars, the AI VTubers captivate audiences with their constant availability and their absurd, unpredictable ways of interaction.
