Sean Baker is now the first person to nab 4 Oscar awards in the same night, tying in with Walt Disney himself.
For his work on Anora, he won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre. He is now the third director to win the editing award, though the first as a solo editor, The Wrap has reported.
News of the same has been circulating on X, drawing varied reactions, though scores online are cheering Baker on and celebrating his win. Check out what one fan said, for instance:
"dude really pulled a reverse disney, independent cinema just leveled up big time."
Scores online echoed the sentiments:
"Anora was fantastic, but part of the reason it won so many things is because the other movies were bad," one user opined.
"That's incredible! Walt Disney's records are tough to break, but Baker did it! Anora's triumph is a testament to his talent," another stated.
"The movie was great imo," someone else opined.
"a legend we love to see it !!!!!!!" one more exclaimed.
Users were ostensibly teeming with opinions online:
"Imagine winning FOUR Oscars in one night… what do you even say??" one user jokingly asked.
"Sean Baker making history! To be the first since Walt Disney in 1954 and the only person to win four Oscars for a single movie is an incredible achievement. What a monumental moment for filmmaking!" another fan penned.
"still don't get the movie, it's a 6 at best," someone else claimed.
"This is wild and well deserved. He just wrote his ticket for a very long and interesting career from here on out!" yet another penned on X.
Users were visibly opinionated about the situation, and while a large number of them lauded the director for his wins, a handful did feel like the movie was subpar at best.
Sean Baker's Anora wins five out of six nominations: Read more
Sean Baker is now on par with Walt Disney for the most number of accolades won in a single night as a director. The latter nabbed four Oscars for four different films back in 1953.
At the time, Disney won best documentary (feature) for Water Birds, best documentary (short) for The Living Desert, best short subject (cartoon) for Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Bloom, and best short subject (two-reel) for Bear Country.
As for Sean Baker's Anora, it was nominated in six categories: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Actress (Mikey Madison) and Best Supporting Actor (Yura Borisov).
Anora chronicles the life of a young s*x worker from New York who weds the son of a Russian oligarch. However, his family opposes their marriage and puts them in jeopardy. The film nabbed five out of the six it was nominated for, only to lose to Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain for Best Supporting Actor.
This is the first time Sean Baker himself has been nominated by the Academy. Back in 2018, Willem Dafoe, who had a role in the director's The Florida Project, nabbed a best supporting actor nomination.
