Former American Idol contestant Ash Ruder has made headlines amidst Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ad controversy. A few years back, Ruder wrote a song, Blue Genes, which went viral recently on TikTok following the denim controversy.
During an interview with KREX News 5 on August 6, the reporter mentioned an ongoing rumor that Ruder was Sydney Sweeney’s cousin. When asked if there was any truth to it, she said:
“I mean, as you know, the internet is never wrong. But I can neither confirm or deny, but I will say that people have figured out murderers on the internet. So, I'm fairly confident in the people on the internet that they can find out the answer pretty quickly.”
However, a community note on X mentions that Ash Ruder is not Sydney Sweeney’s cousin. Ruder was asked how many views her song received, to which she said:
“Well, it was really just a little idea that turned into something that I never would have expected to happen and blow up as it did. But I think so far we're nearing like almost 5 million views, maybe more at this point.”
Ash Ruder shared that she had written Blue Genes on December 8, 2022. The song started off being about her family, not about denim jeans. She used the word “genes” to discuss family traits and the tough times her family had faced.
Ruder added that the song was about ending the negative patterns passed down through generations. She felt proud of this message and thought it was something special in her life.
Ash Ruder also wrote a song about her father’s addiction
Ash Ruder said that a year or two ago, when she wrote the song, she never thought it would become popular because of a denim ad that caused some arguments. But even though it happened that way, she felt happy about how things turned out. She said:
“So, it's been really cool to see and it really has nothing to do with the Sydney Sweeney ad other than it's the same play on words.”
The reporter talked about how Ash Ruder had been on American Idol and sang a song she wrote about her dad's addiction. He also asked what singing and writing songs meant to her. Ash said that songwriting helped her deal with her feelings.
Ruder mentioned that writing songs felt like healing, even more than just writing in a journal. Playing music with her guitar made her feel better. She also said that performing that song on American Idol helped make her relationship with her father stronger, which felt special to her. The singer said:
“I think music is so powerful and it has the ability to either break people or I guess divide them or bring them together. And my hope with this song and all songs that I write is that it unites people and it makes people closer and have a stronger sense of hope and humanity.”
In one of her Instagram posts, Ash Ruder started a “Blue Genes” trend, noting her father’s addiction. She mentioned that her mother also went through depression. Ash said she had problems with eating and used to have bad panic attacks when she was younger, but she learned how to heal and now feels peaceful and happy.
