X, formerly known as Twitter, suffered a major outage on Monday. Multiple users worldwide were unable to access the platform. Reports of service disruptions started surfacing around 8:50 a.m. EST, USA Today reports.

Thousands of users were complaining that they could not load posts or refresh their timelines, multiple reports suggest. An outage-tracking website, Downdetector, recorded over 40,000 reports of issues globally, with significant disruptions in the United States, the United Kingdom, and India.

Many users were faced with an error message on the X page stating,

“Something went wrong, try reloading.”

Others reportedly found the app completely unresponsive.

However, the cause of the outage remains unclear, and the company has yet to issue an official statement. It should be noted that this is the second major service disruption for X in recent months under Elon Musk's leadership.

How did the X outage unfold?

The first signs of trouble allegedly appeared early Monday when users worldwide reported that X was not loading. The outage affected both the mobile app and the website. Many users experienced login failures, slow loading times, and missing posts, among some other issues.

Downdetector recorded over 21,000 outage reports from the U.S. alone, with an additional 10,800 from the U.K. and nearly 2,000 from India, Variety and some other publications report. Users took to alternative platforms like Meta-owned Threads and Reddit to voice their thoughts over the X outage.

Times Now reports that one user wrote on Threads,

"I think X is down, I had nowhere to post about it so I came here."
"Twitter is DOWN! 😱 Glitches, login failures what's happening?", question another.

By 10:30 a.m. ET, the number of reported outages had started declining, USA Today reports. It might suggest that services are gradually being restored. However, some users continued experiencing intermittent glitches even after the platform was back online.

Despite the widespread disruption, X has not issued an official explanation for the outage. Elon Musk is generally known for directly addressing platform-related issues on X. However, has also remained silent this time.

This lack of communication has left users speculating about potential causes. Reports claim that some enthusiasts blame reduced staff numbers following Elon Musk’s mass layoffs, while others suggest server issues or backend maintenance.

Recurring technical issues at X

This is not the first time X has experienced a major service disruption. In August 2024, a similar outage affected a large portion of the platform’s user base. Variety reports that other instances of technical failures include:

  • July 2023: Key features like direct messages and notifications stopped working for many users.
  • March 2024: A Twitter Spaces live audio event featuring U.S. politician Ron DeSantis crashed mid-session.
  • December 2023: Several users were unable to post or view images due to a glitch in the platform’s backend system.
