Dakota Johnson has established herself as a multitalented performer over the span of her career. While she is the daughter of legendary actor Don Johnson, she managed to carve a space for herself in the ever-competitive film industry based on her skills as an actor.

In the latest news about the Materialists star, Dakota Johnson recently sat down for an interview with Deadline at the Red Sea Studio Film festival, where she gave her take on Netflix’s recent Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition. While several top level creatives are afraid of the potential fallout from the recent merger, Johnson seemed to have a more hopeful take.

“People will always fight to be creative and tell stories – I just know that to be true. The way in which that operates will shift and change throughout time. It always has. Hollywood has been in dire situations since it started, so right now, it’s just another version of a rebirth.”

Johnson went on to add:

“And I see that, especially since being here at this incredible festival. It is the collaboration, the excitement, the ambition behind filmmaking, the support of female filmmakers here, the stories that are being told here, the collaboration throughout nations and countries that is so beautiful and inspiring.”

While the recent Netflix purchase is bound to have a tangible impact on the film industry, it remains to be seen if Dakota Johnson’s optimism will be rewarded given the changing landscape of the industry.

Dakota Johnson opens up on directorial debut and more

Apart from her take on the latest merger, Dakota Johnson also shared some interesting information regarding what’s next for her career-wise. On the heels of her role in the Materialists which was met with almost universal acclaim, the actress opened up to Deadline about her upcoming directorial debut.

The film will be titled A Tree Is Blue, though the finer details are currently yet to be revealed. What we do know is that the story centres on a young woman on the autism spectrum who struggles to contend with her overprotective mother while coming of age. Dakota shared the following about her first foray in the director’s chair:

“I can’t say much really. But it’s centered around and written by Vanessa Burkhart. She’s a young, autistic woman and she is a remarkable human. She wrote this story about what it’s like to be an autistic girl who just wants connection and independence and is trying to figure out who she is in relation to other people.”

There is currently no fixed release date for the film.
