At the beginning of his record-breaking Mafiathon 3 live, Twitch star Kai Cenat spoke directly to his supporters, reinforcing his promise to construct a school in Nigeria. Following months of growing pressure and speculations, Cenat provided us with updates on the project's status, setbacks faced, and reasons for its longer-than-anticipated completion time.

In March 2024, Cenat made his first trip to Nigeria, touring Makoko, a Lagos waterfront neighborhood known as the "Venice of Africa." There, he came upon a nearby school where the students were sitting all cramped up in small classrooms. He promised to help them.

During his visit, Cenat assured teachers and kids:

“Whatever they tell me you guys need, we’re gonna make sure you guys have [it].”

Shortly thereafter, he made a public pledge to finance the building of a brand new school for the neighborhood.

Why the delays?

In his recent stream, two individuals from Nigeria and South Africa flew in and gave Kai Cenat updates. The two who were present on the livestream are from Banwo & Ighodalo, along with Enko Education.

The group informed that building a new school with a strong structure and foundation from the ground up in less than two years is "impossible." They claim that the school's topography makes it difficult to complete it in time.

Now the group has decided to shift the place of construction to Yaba, a nearby community in Lagos, as Makoko was a marshy terrain, making it almost impossible to construct the school there. Cenat emphasized that it will take time as "there’s a great deal involved.":

“From land purchase and approvals to construction, staffing, and curriculum there’s a great deal involved."

Kai Cenat went on to stress that the ultimate goal of their project is for the school "to last for a long time."

Cenat, speaking about the ultimate goal, said:

"Beyond streaming, beyond me."

While the process may take time, Cenat has personally donated $128,579 USD for the school to be provided with computers so they could use them for the time being.

Kai Cenat blames nature for its early setbacks back in April

The groundwork had started at Makoko by late 2024, according to Cenat, who also disclosed in April 2025 that his charity had raised more than $1 million. But such preparations were quickly derailed by nature.

On a 27 April 2025 Twitch live stream, Kai Cenat said that all the money they spent "got messed up":

"So, I am going to give you all an inside story. We built a school, all the class rooms and stuff. All in Makoko, over the river. But, due to storms, a lot of it got messed up. The money that we spent, deada** got messed up chat. All of a sudden there was a storm, it messed up a whole lot of stuff. But we're back."

As Kai Cenat discussed the amount of money they had spent, the streamer showed several videos and the new structure of the school. He also mentioned that a new Engineer was hired:

"So we hired an engineer to review and we had the structure updated. Let's go ahead an show you all real quick what's going on. In this video, you can see, look at this chat it is two levels here, alright?"

Cenat's team presented new ideas through the art concepts, which included modern classrooms, a basketball court, and a playground. He even pledged to stream the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the newly constructed school.

The school, when completed, will be free of cost for the children from Makoko, while students from outside areas will have to pay for education.

Steps taken by Kai

A foundation called the Kai Cenat Foundation Inc. has been set up to offer complete openness going forward. The foundation ensures that every single penny is tracked down and no one can personally profit.

As of today, 2 September 2025, the account has a balance of $1,134,453 USD.

The foundation needs $5 million to be raised for accreditation, staffing, construction, and site purchase. Cenat told his viewers:

“That’s what we’re aiming for to get us to the first day of class.”

Kai Cenat has confirmed that the school project will get 15% of all the revenue generated from his Mafiathon 3. The event alone would bring in an estimated $750,000 if he reaches his goal of one million subscribers on Twitch.

In late 2024, Kai donated 20% of his revenue from Mafiathon 2 to the school project.
