Mariah Carey is receiving a huge amount of cash right before Christmas. Two years ago, the All I Want for Christmas Is You singer was sued by Andy Stone and Troy Powers. They claimed that Carey basically copied their song with the same name that was released in 1989. Finally, the legal matters have been resolved, and the judge has dismissed the case in favor of Mariah Carey.

According to TMZ, the court has ordered the people who decided to take Carey to court to pay her $92,000 in sanctions. The legal documents received by TMZ revealed that the judge has ordered sanctions because the lawsuit they filed had baseless claims and lacked merit. The judge believed that a sanction of $92,000 will stop people from repeating the same thing year after year.

Additionally, Mariah will be receiving more than just $92,000, according to TMZ. The outlet also mentioned that the other parties who were involved in the lawsuit will also have to pay up. This brings the total amount to a whopping $110K.

What were the claims made against Mariah Carey's song All I Want for Christmas Is You?

Andy Stone and Troy Powers decided to file a lawsuit against the 56-year-old singer last November. They made the claim that Carey's song had the same title as their 1989 holiday song. They were looking for a payout of at least $20,000 in damages.

TMZ first reported the story. Stone claimed that Mariah copied their song after it got heavy radio play and appeared on the Billboard charts during the 1993 Christmas season.

According to documents shared with the news outlet, Stone and Powers said that Carey's song had multiple similarities with theirs. This includes the melody, the lyrical hook, and the whole vibe of the song, which feels the same.

In their words, Mariah Carey:

"palmed off these works with her incredulous origin story, as if those works were her own."

However, their lawsuit backfired. Now, Stone and Powers have to pay Mariah a sum of $92,000 for making baseless claims.

At the time of writing, Carey's hit song, All I Want for Christmas Is You, has had a total of 2,433,503,042 plays.

The court dismissed the lawsuit against Mariah Carey, saying the claims had no strong proof. The judge ruled in her favor and ordered the accusers to pay over $100,000 in sanctions. This decision ends the long legal battle and confirms that All I Want for Christmas Is You was not copied.
