In recent months, Nicki Minaj has become a widely discussed figure on social media. While she has a contingent of die-hard fans, her public exchanges with Cardi B have drawn significant attention to her image.

In the most recent news about the “Beez in the Trap” artist, Minaj has ventured into the realm of politics and international human rights, more specifically the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Senior Political Correspondent at TIME, Eric Cortellessa, was the first to make the announcement of Nicki Minaj’s involvement via a post on X:

“Scoop: U.S. envoy to the UN @michaelgwaltz and rap superstar @NICKIMINAJ will deliver remarks early this week on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. The unexpected collaboration was arranged by Trump advisor @AlexBruesewitz, who will also speak at the Tuesday event.”

Michael Waltz, the 32nd U.S. Ambassador to the UN, then replied to Cortellessa’s post, praising Nicki Minaj for her involvement in the mission:

“@NICKIMINAJ is not only arguably the greatest female recording artist, but also a principled individual who refuses to remain silent in the face of injustice. I'm grateful she's leveraging her massive platform to spotlight the atrocities against Christians in Nigeria, and I look forward to standing with her as we discuss the steps the President and his administration are taking to end the persecution of our Christian brothers and sisters.”

Shortly thereafter, Nicki Minaj chimed in via X as well. While replying to Ambassador Michael Waltz’s tweet, she added the following thoughts:

“Ambassador, I am so grateful to be entrusted with an opportunity of this magnitude. I do not take it for granted. It means more than you know. The Barbz & I will never stand down in the face of injustice. We’ve been given our influence by God. There must be a bigger purpose.”

Despite some of her recent online remarks, it seems as though Nicki Minaj appears to be using her platform to raise awareness on the issue.

Nicki Minaj: Combating the persecution of Christianity, more

Nicki Minaj’s involvement in the matter of international religious persecution stems from an interaction with President Donald Trump dating back to October. On Halloween day, President Trump added Nigeria to the “Countries of Particular Concern” list by the Department of State, as a result of a reported surge of anti-Christian violence.

The President’s post highlighted the current situation in the African nation:

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN’.”

Nicki Minaj replied to the post shortly thereafter, sharing her thoughts on the matter:

“Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other. Numerous countries all.”

While it remains to be seen what kind of impact the initiative ultimately will have on the affected civilians within Nigeria, it seems like a step in the right direction.
