MrBeast is looking into hosting a real-life Hunger Games with a $1 million prize in the mix.
The YouTuber floated the idea just this week, which comes on the heels of the success of his first game show rollout, Squid Game. Born James Stephen Donaldson, he spoke on The Today Show about his forthcoming plans. Expressing surprise that the hosts knew of his ideas, he said:
"I don't know where you guys are getting your intel from. Well yes, obviously we won't kill people. But yeah, you must have talked to my team. I've been sitting on this idea where it'd be fun to grab potentially 26 random people, to put them on an island. and – not use real weapons, maybe like laser tag or something like that – and then the last remaining one wins a million dollars, to recreate Hunger Games in real life. I think that'd absolutely crush."
Everything we know about MrBeast's plans to launch a real-life Hunger Games following the success of his Squid Game show
As pointed out by IGN, in the original Hunger Games novels and films, the contest is mandatorily played out by the oppressive American regime. It sees citizens across various districts get plucked against their will and chucked into an arena where they must fight each other until only one remains. The game is a means of keeping the power concentrated in the hands of the elite.
"We recreated Squid Game, we also rebuilt Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, and I have a chocolate company, and we gave away golden tickets, brought people out, people loved it," Donaldson continued. "A lot of times we just bring these fictional ideas to life and people love seeing it."
As of this writing, there is no official confirmation or timeline about the same, so fans of the YouTube juggernaut will have to wait and see what he has in store. MrBeast's first game show, Squid Game, however, was a massive hit on Amazon Prime, having seen over a thousand contestants compete against each other.
During his interview on The Today Show, MrBeast also opened up about his latest fundraising initiatives alongside engineer-YouTuber Mark Rober. The two have been rallying to raise $40 million by the end of this month for their Team Water efforts, which aim to equip over 2 million people with access to clean drinking water for the next decade.
