Donald Trump praises Sydney Sweeney over the eugenics-coded American Eagle ad after he learns that the Euphoria actress is a registered Republican. President Donald Trump, en route to Washington on August 3 from Bedminster, N.J., was told by a reporter that Sweeney is a registered Republican, to which Trump said,

"You'd be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That's what I wouldn't have known, but I'm glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic."

Longtime advisor for Donald Trump and the White House communications director, Steven Chung, reacted to the ad's backlash.

"Cancel culture run amok. This warped, moronic and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024. They're tired of this bullsh*t."

Vice President JD Vance, during an August 1 appearance on the conservative podcast Ruthless, said,

"You've got a normal, all-American, beautiful girl doing a normal jeans ad, right? They're trying to sell jeans to kids in America and somehow that's enough to send the other side into a meldown. Did you guys learn nothing from the November 2024 election."

Sweeney's American Eagle ad with the tagline "Sydney Sweeney has Great Jeans" has received backlash after social media users claimed that the ad is eugenics-coded and allegedly racist. In the ad, Sydney says,

"Genes are passed down by parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue."

Social media users questioned the ad for its allegedly disturbing messaging and casting of a white blonde actress, claiming that she has "good genes."

Is Sydney Sweeney a Republican?

Yes, Sydney Sweeney is a Republican. Buzzfeed News, in an August 2 article, revealed that Sydney is a registered Republican, after a post by an X user, @time222smoke, about Sydney's political leanings went viral. As per publicly available voter registration records, published by The Guardian, Sydney has been registered to the Republican Party of Florida since June 2024.

Sweeney's birthplace, Spokane, has also voted Republican in nearly every presidential election since 1948. This isn't the first time Sweeney has received backlash for her political leanings.

In 2023, photos from the actress' mother's 60th birthday party in Idaho showed guests wearing "Make Sixty Great Again," alluding to MAGA support. Sweeney is yet to publicly declare her political affiliation.
