Online memes erupt as Discord down for over 90k users across US

Discord users experienced frustration — while others coped with memes — after the streaming platform encountered a major outage in the U.S. on early Monday, Sept. 8.

Shortly after, news outlets and X (Twitter) pages announced the interruption of service, which prompted more than 90,000 users to lament and grapple with memes as they wait for the platform's restoration.

When chatbot Grok was asked about the incident's potential cause, it stated:

"The exact cause isn't publicly detailed—likely technical issues like server problems or traffic spikes."

Discord down, memes up: Users cope with humor amid the crash

As Discord users experienced the disruption, they turned to X to share their reactions, and humor prevailed across the social media platform.

"DISCORD IS DOWN I REPEAT DISCORD IS DOWN," an internet user posted.

They included a photo of Edward Mason Eggleston's famous "Midnight Rain by Paul Revere" painting, depicting a man in a red coat and tricorne hat, a lantern in his hand, as he rides a galloping horse at full speed while shouting a warning.

Another X user commented with a sped-up clip of people riding the escalator, with the caption:

"Everyone rushing to X to see if Discord is down"

One social media user posted a photo of a kitten staring tearfully at its phone screen, captioning it:

"Us running to X when @discord go down"

Another cat meme circulated, showing an orange tabby trying to hide itself in a black bin from the pointing human fingers.

"'discord down…? But… how will I see my boyfriend' I say, as all of my ancestors point at me in shame"

Meanwhile, one revealed in a lengthy post, laced with sarcasm:

"Thanks, @discord, thanks, you guys really just ruined my relationship with my eboyfriend. We had an edate at 5pm but your servers were “down” I know you losers over there in your office did this just to ruin our relationship, I hope you all are happy for what you done"

"'discord is down to investigate guild unavailability' You mean the ENTIRE system is down due to another bullshit feature most ppl don't even have access to that no one actually wanted added by a team that has lost the plot entirely of what made discord good in the first place???" another commented.

Discord is back: Platform "operational" again after major outage

Following the service interruption, Discord has been restored on the same day.

Per the company's status page, the platform announced that all systems were back to operational after it was unavailable for thousands of users, which peaked at over 100k.

Tracking website Downdetector.com also reported that the outage reached its decline to about 1,300 reported issues by 7:50 p.m. ET, down from a peak of roughly 102,277 reports at 6:20 p.m. ET.
