More about Prince William's announcement, as he talks about arranging something special for what would have been his mother's sixty-fourth birthday
Prince William, in his announcement, said that Princess Diana's upcoming birthday on 1st July would commemorate her passion for activism and advocacy. He further detailed that the campaign called "Homewards" will address and help solve the problem of homelessness in the UK. According to People Magazine, the project was started two years ago in 2023. In a video message released on 25 June 2023 by The Royal Foundation, Prince William addressed people, saying:
"In a modern and progressive society, everyone should have a safe and secure home, be treated with dignity and given the support they need. Through Homewards, I want to make this a reality and over the next five years, give people across the UK hope that homelessness can be prevented when we collaborate."
He added:
“I am fortunate to have seen first-hand the tireless work of people and organizations across the sector, the tangible impact their efforts can have and what can be done when communities are able to focus on preventing homelessness, rather than managing it. It's a big task, but I firmly believe that by working together it is possible to make homelessness rare, brief, and unrepeated and I am very much looking forward to working with our six locations to make our ambition a reality."
Princess Diana was known for being involved with many charities, one of the being Centrepoint. According to their website, Centrepoint is a charity that is specially dedicated to helping young people overcome homelessness. Diana, who had been a patron of the charity since 1992, had taken a young Prince William there, instilling in him a passion for fighting homelessness. Talking about his experience of seeing young people live on the streets in freezing cold temperatures, he said:
"I was very struck by the people I met and what they were struggling with – sleeping rough, sofa surfing, not having basic comforts a lot of us take for granted. That really struck me at a young age, bearing in mind the gulf for me, growing up in a palace, and seeing the other end of the spectrum where others were faced with huge personal challenges and were overcoming them. That was powerful to see at a young age."
According to People Magazine, this year shall mark the second anniversary of the mammoth five-year project launched by The Royal Foundation. This year, Prince William will travel to Sheffield on 1st July and meet representatives from the country's six regions where the project is initially being implemented. In a statement released by Prince William, he addressed the people working in these regions under the project, and said:
"Your experiences are what makes Homewards unique and powerful. We have the ability to harness our collective capabilities, expertise, and resources towards this common cause. I am immensely proud to say that your collective effort has already allowed us to achieve lasting impact."
He further added:
"I am confident we can lead and inspire understanding, empathy and optimism that homelessness can be ended. Focus is also important, and you have identified the groups particularly at risk of homelessness in your locations to drive solutions that show it is possible to prevent their homelessness."
According to CNN, a blue floral dress that Princess Diana had worn back in the 1990s, dubbed the "caring dress," was sold for $500,000 at a recent auction.
