Ahead of the event, Obama took to Facebook to announce that she would be joining Knowles soon:
"I am so excited to join Ms. Tina Knowles on her first book tour on April 30! We will be talking about life, motherhood, and everything in between. Come see us at The Theater at MGM National Harbor. Can't wait!" she penned.
Grammy-winning singer Ledisi opened the event on Wednesday night as she performed Blkwmn, which she said was an ode to all the Black women of the world. Michelle Obama took to the stage shortly after to serve as the host of the night and welcome Knowles onto the stage.
She advised the packed hall to "rest yourself. It's going to be a night." The night saw singing, rounds of applause and cheering, impromptu dance sessions, and uplifting stories from Solange and Beyoncé's mom, as well as the former first lady.
That night, the former reflected on how scary it was for her to release a book, but acknowledged the importance of sharing her side of the story and taking control of the narrative.
"I never thought I'd publish a book. You don't have to publish a book but leave it for your great-grandchildren, so they can know your story," she said.
As reported by USA Today, the evening concluded with a dance from Obama and Knowles to 803Fresh's hit song, Boots on the Ground. Knowles will also see special guests and moderators like Keke Palmer and Gayle King join her along her way before she wraps her tour up in London on June 4.
