Today marks a special day, as the internet celebrates the thirty-third anniversary of the first text message sent on a phone. According to reports, the first text message was sent on December 3, 1992, by a software engineer working in Reading, UK, wishing his colleague "Merry Christmas." Now this historic event is being celebrated by people on X (formerly Twitter), with one person writing:

"The second text was 'k'".

According to History, the first text message was sent by the then-twenty-two year old Neil Papworth, who was working for Sema Group Telecoms and was part of the team recruited by Vodaphone to develop the Short Message Service Center network. Later, on this very day, December 3, Papworth sent the message to Richard Jarvis, the-then Director of Vodaphone, who received the message when attending a party.

More about the first text message sent thirty-three years ago, as fans celebrate the historic occasion

The text message sent to Richard Jarvis was delivered to the phone model Orbitel 901, which launched just few months prior, on May 26, 1992. According to reports, at that time mobile phones could not send text messages in reply, so after sending the text message, Neil Papworth did not receive a reply to his message.

In a 2017 interview with CBC Radio, Neil Papworth explained the historic moment and how he did not put too much thought into the message he sent. He said:

"It didn't feel momentous at all. For me it was just getting my job done on the day and ensuring that our software that we'd been developing for a good year was working OK. I had no idea that first text was going to snowball eventually into this thing we call texting today.

He further added:

"If I had tried to put some kind of meaningful message in there, 25 years later, like today, you guys would be talking about, 'What was he really thinking when he sent that? Why did he say that? What was the real meaning? Whereas the fact that it was just Merry Christmas, it's just, you know, I was wishing someone a Merry Christmas. There's no other meaning to it, really."

At the time the first text message was sent, users could only send texts containing 160 characters. According to reports, on the day the message was sent thirty-three years ago, there was little celebration, but upon learning the news today, users on X (formerly Twitter) are marking the moment. This person said:

"Out of all things to message they messaged something on the wrong date."

Another added:

"not even on christmas."

This person wrote:

"we've come a long way."
"i keep forgetting technology literally just got here" another added.

According to BBC, the number of text messages sent every year has dwindled over the decades with the rise of other services like iMessage, and Whatsapp.
