The investigation into the fatal shooting of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk has an update. Authorities and the messaging platform Discord have confirmed that the suspect, Tyler Robinson, appeared to admit responsibility in private messages to friends before his arrest. The alleged confession was first reported by The Washington Post.
According to law enforcement and a Discord spokesperson, Tyler Robinson sent messages to a group chat of more than 20 people on September 11, 2025. This happened a few hours before being taken into custody. Referring to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Robinson allegedly wrote:
"Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this."
In another alleged message, he wrote:
“im surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments, thanks for all the good times and laughs, you have all been so amazing, thank you all for everything.”
Tyler Robinson's alleged Discord messages regarding the Charlie Kirk shooting
Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was fatally shot at 31 during a student Q&A at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem on September 10, 2025. The attack took place around 12:20 p.m. local time. A manhunt for Robinson went on for nearly 33 hours.
The alleged confessions came when federal authorities were seeking the public's help to identify the shooter. FBI Director Kash Patel had released multiple surveillance images of the suspect during the search. On the other hand, Tyler Robinson reportedly engaged in banter with friends on Discord, where some participants allegedly joked about his resemblance to the images circulating online.
One friend stated,
"Whatever you do do not go to a mcdonalds anytime soon."
Robinson's account allegedly responded:
"Better also get rid of this manifesto and exact copy rifle I have lying around."
According to law enforcement sources, at least three people in the chat asked if Robinson was the gunman behind Kirk's assassination. He did not deny it. Discord later updated its internal review found "no evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on Discord." However, they confirmed the messages were real.
Robinson was arrested late on September 11, 2025, after his father recognized him from FBI photos and confronted him. According to officials, Robinson admitted to being the man in the images. He was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and firearm offenses.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has said the state will seek the death penalty if Tyler Robinson is convicted of Charlie Kirk's murder. Cox stated to ABC News:
"He has not confessed to, to authorities. He is, he is, he is not cooperating, but, but, but all the people around him are cooperating. And I think that's, that's, that's very important."
Robinson remains in custody without bail at Utah County Jail.
