Josh Pickles and his parents were among the eight casualties of a recent boat accident on Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
According to the local authorities, a 10-person group was aboard a 27-foot gold Chris-Craft vessel when the incident happened. Eight people lost their lives, while two were rescued on Saturday, June 21. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Division was able to identify all the victims on Tuesday, a day after the last deceased body was recovered from the lake.
Pickles was married to Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, with whom he shared a daughter. According to ABC 7, Sam Singer, family spokesperson, revealed that Josh’s wife and their seven-month-old toddler didn’t accompany him on the boat. He also revealed that the vessel belonged to the couple.
Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard and Josh Pickles married in 2023, KTVU Fox 2 confirmed. The husband was a DoorDash executive, while the wife has been working at Airbnb for more than six years. After the unfortunate incident at Lake Tahoe, Jordan issued a statement (via KGO).
“We are devastated by this tragedy. No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time on the lake. Our hearts go out to those who tragically lost their lives and the two survivors of this unexpected and deadly storm on Lake Tahoe.”
For those unaware, the tragic accident happened on Saturday afternoon after the boat capsized on Lake Tahoe near D.L. Bliss State Park.
Josh Pickles and others gathered for his mother’s birthday celebrations before the fatal incident
According to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, it received multiple reports of a capsized boat on Saturday, June 21, around 3:00 pm. According to KTVU Fox 2, the vessel overturned “due to a large swell” in the afternoon after a sudden thunderstorm. According to the US Coast Guard (via KTVU Fox 2), “30-knot winds and 6-8 foot swell” were reported around that time.
Initially, six were reported dead, while two were rescued and two were missing. The authorities recovered the remaining deceased bodies in the following days and later confirmed their identities. Josh Pickles and three of his family members were among the deceased, while the rest were their friends. According to Sam Singer’s statement (via KGO),
“This is a terrible heartbreaking tragedy that took the lives of Joshua Pickles, his father Terry, his mother Paula, his uncle Peter as well as friends and family, all of whom were out on the lake celebrating the 71st birthday of his mother," Singer said. "The family has homes in the Bay Area as well as on Lake Tahoe. They love the lake. That adds to the tragedy has occurred.”
Apart from Josh Pickles and his family members, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office identified the remaining victims: Timothy O’Leary (71) from Auburn, Theresa Giullari (66) from Honeoye, James Guck (69) from Honeoye, and Stephen Lindsay (63) from Springwater.
