The latest news involving AI and its ever-expanding reach on society and culture relates to the world of music. For the first time in history, an AI-driven artist has earned a spot on the Billboard radio chart, representing an evolution for creators and their art.
While the artist’s avatar is AI-generated Xania Monet, Monet was created by poet and design studio owner Telisha Jones. The Mississippi native input her poetry and writings in Suno, a form of ChatGPT for lyricists and producers, and the end result was more than anyone could have expected.
Shortly after the news broke, several users were quick to turn to social media with their reactions.
One user wrote,
“We are so irredeemably cooked”
Another chimed in with the following opinion,
“it should be illegal for AI artists to chart at all”
Some were afraid of what this means for the future,
“Music is officially entering its simulation era. Next up: AI winning a Grammy.”
Others questioned the originality of AI-generated content,
“Kehlani dropped (un)Folded in July....Xania Monet dropped an album called Unfolded in August...Wonder if there's some influence there”
Lastly, there were also several tweets in support of artists who could be affected if this becomes a trend, including the following,
“I genuinely want actual R&B artists to be seeing this kind of success. Not AI”
Xania Monet - Everything you need to know
As previously stated, Xania Monet is not a human artist, but rather an AI creation, engineered by Telisha Jones. Her ability to hit the mainstream has been truly shocking, with Monet amassing over seventeen million streams in two months. Not to mention a reported $3 million record deal with Neil Jacobson’s independent label Hallwood Media after a high-stakes bidding war, as per Forbes.
“How Was I Supposed to Know?” Is Monet’s breakthrough single. It started off by gaining traction on TikTok and various other social media platforms before a swell of awareness grew the expanse of its reach to streaming services and digital retailers. Once this happened, the song began to chart. Xania Monet’s library currently consists of 5 tracks.
Notable singers in the R&B space, including Kehlani and SZA, have been vocal about their disdain for this new development. While other musicians are sure to follow suit, Romel Murphy, Jones’s manager, has only one simple request, regardless of who is consuming the content,
“Be it a radio programming director, be it a music fan, be it our peers, colleagues, artists. Just listen to the songs. Listen to the lyrics. And then make your judgment.”
The future of music and entertainment is now at a critical turning point. It remains to be seen how this divisive issue will shape the future.
