A streaming deal extension between Paramount and Tyler Perry is reportedly in the works.
Deadline has reported that David Ellison's streaming company is speaking with the director to extend its streaming contract beyond what is currently obligated. Per the outlet, nothing has been signed, though the deal is likely to continue in non-exclusivity. Furthermore, this only entails series, while TV and films would be exempt, given Tyler Perry's obligations towards Netflix.
The outlet has also reported that the Madea actor also has an existing contract with BET Media Group until 2028. They announced the same in April last year, and it was simply an extension of his pre-existing 2017 contract with the studio. The actor also reportedly owns a minority stake in the company.
Everything we know about Tyler Perry's business ventures:
Deadline reported in April last year that Tyler Perry was extending his partnership with Paramount. At the time, his new contract entailed that he deliver several new episodes for BET and BET+ across existing and new TV series.
The writer, director, producer, actor, and playwright was reportedly interested un purchasing BET Media Group before its parent company, Paramount, decided against selling:
“Tyler Perry is simply without rival as a creator of content that powerfully resonates with audiences across genres, formats, and platforms. Our programming partnership with Tyler – undoubtably the largest deal ever in the industry with a Black creator – has been hugely successful; delivering the number one series across all TV among Black audiences and five of the top 10 series on cable among Black viewers,” said Scott Mills, President & CEO of BET Media Group. “We are thrilled to extend our extraordinary relationship with Tyler and to continue to be the home of the largest and most diverse collection of new Tyler Perry content for years to come.”
The actor has a deal with Netflix in place, which he signed in February last year. Under this network, Perry has produced two seasons of Beauty in Black, as well as movies like A Jazzman’s Blues, Madea’s Destination Wedding, and The Six Triple Eight. For BET, short for Black Entertainment Television, he has two hit series, including Sistas and The Oval.
“Scott Mills and his team at BET have been incredibly supportive throughout our time working together, and I’m excited to continue bringing these stories to the screen,” Perry said in April 2024. “I’m grateful to our loyal audiences for watching week after week and engaging these stories.”
The Daily Mail reported that BET was launched in 1980 by Robert Johnson, the one-time cable lobbyist, and his wife, Sheila Johnson. Paramount acquired the company in 2000.
