NBA free agent Malik Beasley has found himself in the crosshairs of a federal investigation over allegations of gambling. Beasley was earlier reported to be on the cusp of securing a $42 million ($14 million annually) deal with the Detroit Pistons. The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. attorney, and the move could have major implications for his career.
According to ESPN, these allegations go back to the 2023-24 season when Beasley was with the Milwaukee Bucks. While the investigation continues, there’s no indication that Malik Beasley’s jail time is imminent, as no charges have been filed. This was confirmed by Beasley’s attorney, Steve Hanley, who released a statement to the press in which he said:
"An investigation is not a charge. Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the U.S. constitution. As of now he has not been charged with anything"
The NBA authorities have declared their support and cooperation amid the allegations, and the news has caused a stir on social media as well. Just recently, Jontay Porter received a lifetime ban for gambling violations. The authorities have taken an increasingly strict stance in instances of gambling violations like these in the past. It remains to be seen how Malik Beasley’s case plays out in the coming days.
Malik Beasley's deal with Pistons on thin ice?

This isn’t the first time Malik Beasley’s legal issues have made headlines. He has previously faced felony charges, but not in connection with the current federal gambling investigation. In September 2020, following an ill-fated encounter with a family, Beasley was arrested and charged with felony threats of violence and drug possession.
As part of a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to the charges and was suspended by the NBA for 12 games without pay following this incident. Additionally, he was sentenced to 120 days in jail (served after the 2020-21 NBA season, with release after 78 days) and was barred from possessing a gun for life.
The NBA journeyman had an impressive last season, and the Pistons were leading the charge with concerted efforts to get a deal over the line for Beasley. He shot a blistering 41.6% from three-point range on 9.3 attempts per game and secured 16.3 points per game in the last season.
But as a result of these allegations coming to light, the Detroit Pistons have reportedly put the brakes on his contract negotiations. It remains unclear how the negotiations will proceed given these allegations.
