Conan O'Brien has made an indelible mark on comedy with his decades-long career as a writer, late-night talk show host, and podcaster. His audience has stayed by his side amidst network drama, and he has forged his way forward in a highly competitive industry in his own unique way.

In the latest news about the former Mark Twain Award recipient, Conan O'Brien recently sat down for an interview at the Oxford Union. In his discussion, which was published online on January 7, he touched on several interesting subjects. With that said, the part of his interview that drew the most attention was his comments on comedians who spend the bulk of their efforts going after President Donald Trump.

O'Brien stated,

"I think some comics go the route of ‘I’m gonna just say eff Trump all the time’ or that’s their comedy and I think well now, a little bit, you’re being co-opted. Because you’re so angry, you’ve been lulled, it’s like a siren leading you into the rocks, you’ve been lulled into just saying ‘Eff Trump, eff Trump, eff Trump. Screw this guy.’
I think you've now put down your best weapon, which is being funny and you've exchanged it for anger."

He went on to add and elaborate how, as comedians by profession have to find a way to be funny and create good art. Good art, as per O'Brien, remains a powerful weapon against power.

“And that person, or any person like that would say, ‘Well things are too serious now. I don’t need to be funny’ And I think, well if you’re a comedian you always have to be funny, you just have to find a way. And you just have to find a way to channel that anger into a way that, cause good art will always be a great weapon. Will always be a perfect weapon against power. But if you’re just screaming, and you’re just angry, you’ve lost your best tool in the toolbox.”

Once the interview began circulating online, political commentator Piers Morgan responded to Conan O'Brien's thoughts by reposting a snippet on X and adding the following message,

"Couldn’t agree more… I wish was back in late night. Such a funny, smart and perceptive guy. All the others (apart from Fallon) have become TDS activists which is very predictable and boring and alienates half of America."

Conan O'Brien’s thoughts on comedians being too focused on channelling their ire towards President Trump, he states, are a byproduct of the environment that Trump created.

“We don’t have a straight line right now. We have a very bendy, rubbery line. We have a slinky. We have a fire hose that’s whipping around spewing water at 100 mph. So comedically, it’s been very challenging.”

He noted that parodying a character who is already so unpredictable can be a difficult task to navigate, which creates a vacuum for comedic content that isn’t coming from a place of anger.
