Dua Lipa is now officially a citizen of Kosovo.
The Levitating singer was granted citizenship just this week, with President Vjosa Osmani hosting the ceremony. Osmani said it was an "honour" to do so, referring to Dua Lipa as "one of the most iconic cultural figures in our country's history."
As reported by the BBC and People Magazine, the songstress was born to Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, who are Bosnian and Kosovan, respectively. Her grandparents lived in Kosovo, though when the Bosnian war began, her parents moved to London.
Dua stayed there with her family until the age of 11, when she shifted back to Kosovo. However, she eventually returned to London at the age of 14 in pursuit of a music career.
"Everything was Albanian at home, and English was my school life," she told Vanity Fair in 2021. "I had so much family in Kosovo, but also because of the situation and not being able to go back, I had never really met my family."
Everything we know about Dua Lipa's newest citizenship:
Per BBC, in a statement commemorating her new citizenship, Dua Lipa said:
"It completes the duality I have always had within. I love this country and this means so much to me and my family." She added, it "feels like my two sides are now one."
Osamni also took to X to mark the occasion with photos of the ceremony, alongside the following caption:
"Dua and Kosovo have always been inseparable. From the world's biggest stages to the hearts of millions, she's carried our story with strength, pride, and grace... Our gratitude is endless for everything Dua has done, and continues to do for Kosovo." In a follow-up post, she penned, "Kosovo's gem - welcome back home."
Arise TV has reported that the singer was visibly emotional throughout the ceremony and was greeted by a children's choir singing some of her hits from her catalogue. The UK Ambassador to Kosovo, Jonathan Hargreaves, was also by her side. He later took to X to share a photo with her, describing her as “one of our own."
She is now a citizen of UK, Albania, which she got in 2022, and Kosovo. Two years ago, she was named an Honorary Ambassador of Kosovo, also by President Osmani. At the time, she said in a statement:
“The youth of Kosovo deserves the right to visa liberalisation, freedom to travel and to dream big," before referring to the title as “an honour and a privilege."
Dua Lipa was in the country to headline the Sunny Hill Festival, which took place on Friday night, August 1.
