BBC commentator John Hunt shared his first interview since losing his wife and two daughters in a devastating triple homicide in July 2024. The tragic event that made headlines led to the deaths of Carol Hunt and her daughters, Hannah and Louise. John, along with his surviving daughter Amy, spoke with the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire. They opened up about their path through grief and aimed to explain what happened during the tragedy.
When John and Amy Hunt spoke in an interview, they discussed how they got through each day and corrected wrong details in news reports. John talked about how he begins and ends every day by talking to his late wife and daughters, saying they still feel like a part of his daily life. Amy highlighted their mission to honor Carol, Hannah, and Louise as individuals with full lives, not just as victims of their tragic deaths.
John Hunt said,
"From the moment I wake up, I say good morning to each of them. Sometimes I say out loud to Hannah and Louise, 'girls, sorry I can't be with you, I'm with your mum at the moment'. As I close my eyes at night, I chat to them as well. They're very close to me all the time."
John reflected on this tragic incident,
"When it happened I thought, 'how on earth am I ever going to be able to care about anything ever again'? It's fine to sit with that thought in the wreckage of what was our personal disaster. But you come to realise that, with a little bit of work, you can find some light again."
Kyle Clifford sentenced to life for the triple murder of Hunt family members
On July 9, 2024, Kyle Clifford, who was Louise Hunt's ex-boyfriend, went into the Hunt family home, saying he wanted to drop off some belongings. While inside, he killed Carol Hunt. When Louise got home, he tied her up, attacked her, and shot her with a crossbow, killing her. Later, he tied up Hannah Hunt and killed her with the same weapon. Hannah was able to call emergency services and report the attack before she died. Her call helped the police find Clifford.
Clifford first refused to admit any involvement, but later confessed to three murders, false imprisonment, and carrying an illegal weapon. He rejected the rape accusation, but the court found him guilty. In March 2025, he received a life sentence with no chance of parole.
John Hunt's family addresses misinformation and praises Hannah’s final act of courage
The Hunts wanted to clear up some false ideas out there. People have said John Hunt found the bodies, but that’s not true. They also wanted to set the record straight about how Louise and Clifford’s relationship was portrayed. Amy explained that during their time together, Clifford didn’t show any signs of being violent. It was only after they broke up that controlling behavior started to show, but none of them could have guessed things would turn so violent.
John Hunt believes Hannah’s quick call for help saved his life. He brought this up again in the interview and said it’s something he leans on as he works to put his life back together each day.
John Hunt and Amy manage their grief and work to ensure their loved ones are represented. They use public statements to honor the memory and dignity of Carol, Hannah, and Louise.
