Businessman and former CEO of Twitter (now X), Jack Dorsey, is reportedly planning to relaunch a new version of Vine. For the uninitiated, this service allowed users to post short-form videos. Although it was rolled back in 2017, a new version of the app, named diVine, will reportedly be out. This service is described as:“Short-form looping videos. Authentic moments. Human creativity. Experience the raw, unfiltered creativity of real people sharing genuine moments in 6-second loops. Built on decentralized technology, owned by no one, controlled by everyone.”Reports also mention that diVine will restrict AI-generated content. The platform will also have the archived videos from the earlier version. Although Vine was developed by technologist Evan Henshaw-Plath, the latest version is funded by ‘and Other Stuff,’ a non-profit initiative of Jack Dorsey’s.According to Celebrity Net Worth, Jack Dorsey has a net worth of $4 billion. In 2018, he purchased a property in the Hollywood Hills for $4.22 million. A year later, the house was sold for $4.6 million. He lives in a large house in San Francisco, which he purchased for $10 million in 2012. Five years later, he bought the next house for $22 million.During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jack Dorsey started an initiative known as Start Small, which worked towards women’s health, education, and other issues of the time. Start Small costs him around $1 billion. For the new version, Evan had to rummage through the archived material, which was kept in backup, even though the original app was closed in 2016.What did Evan Henshaw-Plath and Jack Dorsey say about the new version of Vine?Speaking to TechCrunch, Evan Henshaw-Plath said that he initially wanted to take a walk down memory lane. As a result, he planned to do something that would take users to watch the old content. His motivation was to revisit the time when social media was not dictated by algorithms. Evan spent a great deal of time forming data scripts and also reconstructed them. Regarding the old content, he said:“I wasn’t able to get all of them out, but I was able to get a lot out and basically reconstruct these Vines and these Vine users, and give each person a new user [profile] on this open network.”He further said:“We have about 150,000 to 200,000 of the videos from about 60,000 of the creators.”Meanwhile, Jack Dorsey noted that Nostr, the open protocol used by diVine, empowers developers to build new apps without relying on big corporations, major funding, or large teams. He added that his support for the non-profit was meant to give talented engineers the freedom to demonstrate what open, censorship-resistant systems can achieve, without the risk of any company shutting them down.Speaking about AI-generated content, Evan Henshaw-Plath mentioned:“Companies see the AI engagement and they think that people want it. They’re confusing, like yes, people engage with it; yes, we’re using these things but we also want agency over our lives and over our social experiences.”He mentioned that users still reminisce about the older times. According to him, it was the era when social media didn’t just work on algorithms but when the focus was on building communities. Also Read: What is the Kick Partnership Program?
