American Pentecostal televangelist Jimmy Swaggart has died. He was 90 years old.
His demise was announced on Facebook, and further details about the same remain scarce. BBC has reported, however, that he had suffered a cardiac arrest on June 15. He was at his Baton Rouge home at the time and was promptly rushed to the hospital.
Celebrity Net Worth has placed Jimmy Swaggart's net worth at around $5 million. To date, he is known for broadcasting his sermons via radio back in the 1960s before he eventually pioneered televangelism.
In his heyday, these sermons would reach over 3,000 stations, according to Celebrity Net Worth, and therefore, millions of viewers. In his prime, he was one of the most influential figures in American evangelicalism.
Jimmy Swaggart's life and legacy
According to the BBC, his church has since issued a statement in his honor:
"For over seven decades, Brother Swaggart poured out his life preaching the gospel, singing songs of the faith, and pointing millions to the saving power of Jesus Christ and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit," it read.
Following his hospitalization last month, Jimmy Swaggart's son, Donnie, shared a video on his social media account reflecting on the incident.
“Right now, he is in ICU and without a miracle, without a miracle, his time will be short. But we believe God. We’re not, we’re not giving up. We’ve already told the doctors we don’t wanna hear anything from them. We will make decisions in our own time. But we are going to give the Lord an opportunity to work.”
Jimmy Swaggart had grown up with modest means as the son of a preacher, in a family with a propensity for music. He'd grown up learning piano and gospel music, even playing with cousins who went on to become musicians, including Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley.
