Crown Prince Haakon of Norway has broken his silence on his stepson, Marius Borg Høiby’s arrest.

Per People Magazine, Marius Borg Høiby, 28, was arrested in August last year on charges relating to the alleged physical and psychological abuse of a 20-year-old woman. He has since been charged with 32 crimes by the state prosecutor of Norway, including one count of rape with intercourse and three counts of rape without intercourse.

Per Reuters, Prince Haakon has issued a statement since the charges were announced on Monday, August 18:

"We will continue to carry out our duties as best we can, as we always do. Everyone involved in this case probably finds it challenging and difficult."

The case against Marius Borg Høiby explored:

According to Global News California, Oslo state attorney Sturla Henriksbø has revealed that Marius Borg Høiby is looking at up to a decade behind bars if he's convicted. Per the BBC, he has decided to plead guilty to the lesser charges once the trial commences, but will maintain his innocence against the grave ones. Some of his offenses also include traffic violations and making death threats.

“These are very serious acts that can leave lasting scars and destroy lives,” the prosecutor said. “The fact that Marius Borg Høiby is a member of the royal family should, of course, not mean that he should be treated more lightly or more severely than if similar acts had been committed by others,” Henriksbø added.

The 28-year-old is the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit. However, he does not have a royal title to his name, and is excluded from the line of succession. In 2017, according to People Magazine, it was announced that he would not have a public role either.

Per the outlet, Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit share two kids: Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 21, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 19. They are second and third in line to the throne, respectively.

Per Hello magazine, his trial could kick off in January and potentially span six weeks. The Norwegian royal court said in a statement:

"It is for the courts to consider this matter and reach a decision. We have no further comment."

People Magazine has reported that Høiby was detained for 30 hours last year upon getting cuffed, though he was eventually let go. As of this writing, he has yet to address the debacle himself.
