Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for New York City mayor, caught people's attention when he mentioned rapper 50 Cent while discussing his tax plan. The 33-year-old State Assemblyman hinted that his idea to raise taxes on rich people and big companies might not make the musician happy, which led to a sharp reply on social media.
In a campaign speech, Mamdani laid out his money ideas. These include a 2% across-the-board tax increase for individuals making $1 million or more each year and higher taxes on corporate earnings. He said,
"Corporations that are making millions of dollars, not in revenue, but in profit. And the second is taxing the top 1% of New Yorkers. We're talking about people who make a million dollars a year or more, taxing them just by a flat 2% tax increase."
Emphasizing that the impact for top earners would be relatively minor, he said,
“This is about $20,000 a year. It's a rounding error. And all of these things together, they make every New Yorker's life better, including those who are actually getting taxed.”
In a brief remark that drew attention, Zohran Mamdani added,
“And I know if 50 Cent is listening, he's not going to be happy about this. He tends to not like this tax policy.”
Rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, known for his outspoken commentary on political and social issues, quickly responded on Instagram. Sharing Mamdani’s remarks, he wrote,
“Where did he come from whose friend is this? I’m not feeling this plan no. I will give him $258,750 and a first class one way ticket away from NY. I’m telling Trump what he said too!”
The post got a lot of people talking, with many on social media chiming in about the clash between the politician and the star.
As of now, Zohran Mamdani hasn't said anything about 50 Cent's comments.
Zohran Mamdani's historic primary win signals shift in democratic politics
Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor. He comes from a family of immigrants. According to Al Jazeera, his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is an academic and his mother, Mira Nair, is a filmmaker. Mamdani was born in Uganda, and he grew up in South Africa and the US. At seven, he moved to New York.
If he wins the election, Mamdani would be the first Muslim mayor of Indian descent to run the city. His win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary marks a big shift in local politics. Cuomo, who quit in 2021, praised Mamdani and the success of his grassroots campaign.
Political experts say Mamdani's growing fame comes from his appeal to young voters and his focus on fair economics. The main election will happen in November 2025.
