Jesy Nelson gave birth to her twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, on May 15 last year. At the time of their birth, Nelson had to deliver them prematurely at just 31 weeks and 5 days. She took to Instagram to announce the birth of her daughters, sharing the good news with her followers.

Nelson posted a collage photo of herself holding one of her daughters and her partner, Zion, holding their other daughter. She wrote in the caption:

"So… Our beautiful baby girls decided to come at 31weeks plus 5 days. It all happened so quickly, but we are so blessed that they are here with us, healthy and fighting strong! We’ve never felt more in love 🥹 Everybody meet Ocean Jade Nelson-Foster and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster Born on 15.05.2025 🌊📖"

Seven months later, Jesy Nelson took to Instagram again to share some devastating news about her twins. She revealed that Ocean and Story have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), also known as Werdnig-Hoffman disease.

She said:

"After the most gruelling three, four months, and endless appointments, the girls have now been diagnosed with a severe muscular disease called SMA type 1... It does affect every muscle in the body, down to legs, arms, breathing, swallowing... Essentially, what it does is, over time, it kills the muscles to the body, and if it's not treated in time, your baby's life expectancy will not make it past the age of two... ."

She also added that doctors have told her that her babies may never be able to walk or gain their neck strength, which means that they would be disabled when they grow up. Jesy Nelson also shared a few symptoms to look out for in newborns, trying to raise awareness for the disease that can save many children's lives.

Jesy Nelson's pregnancy journey

Ocean Jade and Story Monroe are Jesy Nelson's first set of children, making it her first pregnancy. The former Little Mix singer took to Instagram last year in January to share the wonderful news. She posted a picture holding a Polaroid where Zion was holding her swollen belly with one hand, as she was holding a bowl, and smiling at the camera.

She captioned the announcement post:

"She's eating for 3 now 👶👶," revealing that she and Zion were expecting twins.

A few months later, she gave her fans an update about her babies, sharing that there were a few complications with having identical twins. She even added that there could be a possibility where both babies could pass away.

10 days after the birth of her twins, Jesy Nelson wrote a heartfelt post on Instagram along with a photo of herself holding her two daughters, with her partner by her side. She wrote:

"Nothing or no one will ever be able to prepare you as a parent for NICU. It's the most scary overwhelming feeling of emotions not being able to feel like you can protect your babies."

Nelson continued:

"Naturally as a mother you just want to hold them and comfort them when they cry but you can't because there are what feels like a million wires coming out of them and tubes and masks in the way with people poking and prodding them it breaks your heart into a million pieces. But slowly as the days go by and they get stronger and wires start to come away, moments like this feel like a dream."

Jesy Nelson concluded the post by writing:

"Having them reunited for the first time ever today was the most magical feeling I will never be able to describe 🥹 the strongest little girls I've ever known who really do have the most inspiring story to tell 🤍"

In August, she took to Instagram to frame a beautiful caption with her daughters' names. She wrote:

"Here's a Story about a love that runs as deep as the Ocean 🤍"

In October, Jesy Nelson shared another photo of herself holding her babies, talking about how "incredible" her body is. She wrote:

"I never thought it would have taken having two beautiful baby girls, that I could have potentially lost, to make me realise how incredible my body actually is. 33 years of extreme diets, 33 years of putting myself down wishing my belly was flatter, wanting my waist just a little smaller and almost going through with a boob job, to now standing here having this photo taken."

Jesy Nelson proudly shared about how she has learned to accept and love her body, not trying to chase the societal standards of beauty. She added:

"I can honestly say I've never felt prouder of my body and what it has been through! Yes my boobs hang lower and my belly is bigger and squishier - it doesnt look how it used to, but my god it created the best gift that has ever happened to me. I cannot wait to show my girls the first place they called home and the place where they defied all the odds."

She concluded her post by writing about how she felt a few months ago, and how it is something she does not want her daughters to ever feel in the future. Jesy Nelson also added an encouraging message for all mothers and future mothers:

"If there's anything I've learned over the past 9 months of being pregnant, it's that I never want my girls to feel the way I did about my body for so many years. So to all the future mummies or the mummies that have just given birth, if you're struggling with how you are feeling in yourself or are maybe even feeling the pressure to 'snap back' just take a moment to remember what YOU did! Be kinder to yourself and remember you are INCREDIBLE!!!"

Jesy Nelson welcomed her twin daughters prematurely in May 2025. Despite the complications during her pregnancy, Nelson shared that her baby girls were "healthy and strong" in the announcement post. However, after seven months, she revealed that her twins had been diagnosed with the "most severe muscular disease," that is SMA 1.
