On August 9, CNN published an exclusive report of the uncommonly seen photos of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and JFK Jr.'s marriage. It was a private wedding that happened in 1996 on Cumberland Island in Georgia. Journalist Carole Radziwill recalled the couple’s 1996 marriage, telling Daily Mail:

“It was the most famous wedding of the year, the decade. And no one but the thirty-two close friends and family who arrived, knew.”

Bessette was a fashion publicist who worked with Calvin Klein. The couple started dating in 1994, and a year later, JFK Jr. proposed to her. One of their friends, Gustavo Paredes, previously told People Magazine:

“She didn’t think he was serious. He couldn't believe she turned him down. It had never happened before.”

While they were dating before the proposal, the couple had a brief split, and JFK Jr. reconciled with Daryl Hannah, SheKnows reports. However, this didn’t last long, and he went back to Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. A year later, in 1995, he asked for her hand while they were on a boat ride.

RoseMarie Terenzio, who worked with JFK Jr., said Bessette did not immediately say yes to his proposal. Terenzio, in her book Fairy Tale Interrupted, wrote:

“She understood that the formality meant something, especially to John and his lifestyle. He was pretty old-fashioned, and given his place in the world, he couldn’t be single forever.”

JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made headlines in 1996 after having a confrontation in Central Park.

What did JFK Jr. tell his friend about Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s declining interest in him?

According to the SheKnows report, the couple faced some difficulties in their relationship.

In July 1999, Kennedy reportedly told a friend that he wanted to have children, but Carolyn avoided the topic and did not want to be intimate with him. He said it wasn’t just about intimacy, as they could no longer talk about anything and felt like strangers. He was allegedly frustrated and said that if things didn’t change, they might end up divorcing.

According to Edward Klein’s book, The Kennedy Curse, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy told a friend that she disliked living under constant public attention. She said John might be fine with it, but she wasn’t, and she couldn’t imagine raising a child in that kind of environment.

The couple lost their lives in a plane crash on July 16, 1999. Their bodies were recovered by Navy divers from the Atlantic Ocean five days later. Kennedy, who drove the aircraft, reportedly made an error, according to the NTSB. One of his friends, Steven M. Gillon, said:

“It was John’s poor judgment that led to his death and the death of his wife and his sister-in-law, and there’s no way around that. John bears the responsibility of his recklessness that night and John alone.”

Some of the photos shared by CNN include Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy with her pals Jessica Weinstein and Jules Watson. Other photos showed JFK Jr. with his best man, Anthony Radziwill. The couple also had a rehearsal dinner. Bessette also shared a dance with Radziwill.
